wrong youâve been about everything!â
âYou?â echoed Twink weakly, her thoughts spinning. âBut â but Teena, thatâs not like you at all. I mean ââ
âHow would you know?â demanded her little sister, looking close to tears. âYouâve been here at Glitterwings for the last two years! You were always treating me like a baby in acorn school whenever you came home â well, Iâm not .â
Twink opened her mouth and closed it again. She couldnât speak. She looked at Zuzu, and it felt as if a chasm had opened beneath her feet. Oh, how had she got everything so utterly wrong?
âZuzu . . . were you really trying to save Teena?â she whispered.
The sobbing fairy nodded, and Twink winced, aching inside. âOh, Zuzu, Iâm so sorry . . .â She reached out to touch the younger fairyâs shoulder, but Sooze jerked her cousin away.
âI think youâve said enough for now, Twink,â she snapped.
Twink swallowed hard. In a sudden flurry of wings, Miss Twilight and Bimi arrived, and she realised dazedly that not much time had passed since they left Violet Branch. It felt like a lifetime ago.
Miss Twilight took one look at them, and held her hands out to the younger fairies. âCome along, everyone,â she said. âI think we all need some hot, sweet nectar.â
To Twinkâs surprise, not much was said as they sat in Miss Twilightâs office. Sooze sat scowling down at her acorn-shell cup. Bimi perched quietly beside Twink, sipping her hot nectar. She rubbed her wing warmly against Twinkâs, and Twink gave her a grateful smile.
The two younger fairies sat huddled together. The colour slowly returned to their cheeks as they drained their drinks. âWould â would we really have fallen if Twink and Sooze hadnât arrived?â asked Teena fearfully.
Miss Twilight nodded. âThough you wouldnât have fallen very far â thereâs a protection spell around the railing. Still, it would have been a nasty shock for you, and you might have hurt yourself on one of the branches.â
Twink saw her little sister take a deep breath. âIt was my fault,â she blurted out. âZu only came along because she couldnât talk me out of it. Please donât punish her. Iâm the one who should be punished!â
Miss Twilight smiled slightly. â I shanât be doing any punishing â youâre Mrs Lightwingâs students, not mine. However, I shall recommend to her that you receive more of a punishment than Zuzu.â
Teena looked relieved. She and Zuzu exchanged a small smile.
âBut Iâm afraid Mrs Lightwing might want to make an example of you both regardless,â added Miss Twilight. âYou were told at the start of the year that the platform was strictly forbidden!â
âWill they be expelled?â burst out Twink anxiously. âOh, please â it wasnât really Teenaâs fault; it was mine! If I hadnât been such a moss brain all term, then this probably wouldnât have happened ââ
âI donât think you need to worry about their being expelled,â said Miss Twilight gently, gathering up the cups. âBut there might be quite a bit of window-washing in their futures! Go to bed now, everyone â except for Twink and Sooze. I want to speak to you both.â
Bimi gave Twink a quick, reassuring smile as she left. Teena and Zuzu looked subdued, glancing worriedly behind them as they shut the door.
Miss Twilight sat behind her desk and laced her fingers together. âThere seemed to be some sort of argument going on as I flew up,â she said mildly, looking from Twink to Sooze.
Sooze glowered at the ceiling, tapping her pink wings together.
âEr â yes,â muttered Twink. Then she remembered Teenaâs earlier frankness, and she squared her shoulders. âIt was my fault,â she said.
