way.â
âItâs like everythingâs on a different scale,â he says. âStripped down or something.â
I nod. Itâs exactly how Iâve been feeling. Unencumbered. Raw. Exposed.
Weâre quiet again for a moment, sitting in an easy, comfortable silence. Itâs hard to believe this is the same guy from the car accident, the same guy from the boat. I no longer feel the insane urge to make him like me because, I realize with a jolt, heâs sort of acting like he does.
âSorry, about before,â he says suddenly, as if reading my mind.
âWhat do you mean?â I ask innocently.
He sighs, leaning back to look me in the eyes. âI wasnât exactly the worldâs greatest host.â
I stare at him carefully, waiting to see if heâll say more.
âBad day?â I ask when he doesnât.
âA few of them,â he says with a tentative smile. Itâs a smile I recognize right away: the one you try on when your face wants to be happy but the rest of youhasnât quite caught up. Itâs been a permanent part of my wardrobe, of late. âAnd when you . . . when I saw you . . .â
âYou thought I was some privileged celebrity here to invade your island and screw up your summer?â I guess.
Noel runs his hand through his hair sheepishly. Adorably. âNot in so many words, but . . . something like that.â
âItâs okay,â I say. âI understand.â I look out at the ocean and watch Murphy splashing in the frothy surf. A breeze rolls off the water and I pull my sweater closer.
âDid you sleep out here?â he asks, as if noticing for the first time that my hair is full of sand.
âI guess so.â I laugh. âI came out last night to go for a swim, and the next thing I knew . . .â
His eyes widen in surprise. âYou went in? Youâre insane!â
âI am?â
âI donât swim in this water until the middle of August.â Noel shakes his head. âNobody does.â
âIt was refreshing,â I insist. âYou should try it.â
Noel cocks his head as if heâs trying to figure out if any of this is real. âThis has got to be pretty different from the way you normally vacation, right?â he says. âPrivate yachts. Infinity pools. Thatâs more your scene, I bet.â
âYou have me all figured out,â I say. âIbiza or bust.â
He laughs, a genuine laugh that makes my cheeks warm with pride. Itâs been a long time since Iâve had to work so hard to earn a real laugh from somebody. I realize, with surprise, that I like it.
âMy sister is going to lose it,â he says. âI promised her the next time I hung out with you guys Iâd bring her along. Sheâs kind of obsessed.â
âReally?â I smile.
âReally,â he says. âItâs weird. I mean, sheâs fourteen. But sheâs super smart.â
âAnd smart people donât like my music?â
âNo, I didnât mean . . .â Noel lowers his head onto his crossed forearms. âThis is why I try not to talk. It usually just gets me in trouble.â
âIâd like to meet her,â I say. âYour sister.â
âYou will.â Noel lifts his head back up. âSheâs probably hiding in the bushes right now. Or she would be, if she hasnât stayed up all night doing her homework.â
âHomework?â I ask. âIsnât school out for the summer?â
âShe takes classes,â he says. âFor fun . Sheâs not normal.â
âShe sounds great.â
âShe is.â Noel stares up at the blue sky and stretches his legs out toward the ocean. âSheâs the reason I came back.â
Itâs clear thereâs more to the story, and I get a strange sensation that he wants to talk about it, but I feel like Iâve done enough prying for one morning.
