demanded. âHow did you get in here?"
Sarah reached for the call button as the man moved closer to her bed.
âReady to call in the cavalry so soon?â he drawled. âIâm hurt. We havenât even talked yet, Sarah."
âI asked who you are,â she repeated, unsure of what to make of his cynical, sarcastic tone.
âThatâs right. Jake says you donât remember anything or anyone. Very convenient."
âNot for me. How do you know Jake?"
âIâm his brother, Dylan,â he replied, his gaze never wavering from her face. âSound familiar, Princess?"
âOnly in that Jake told me he had a brother,â she replied. Now that she knew who he was, she threw back her shoulders and lifted her chin. She might have to answer to Jake, but she didnât have to answer to his brother. âAnd donât call me princess."
âWhat should I call you? I doubt Sarah is your real name, since Iâve spent the past seven months looking for you. My gut tells me youâve been a number of people over the years, depending on whatever scam you were running. Otherwise we would have been able to track you down. But you were playing a game, a very good game -- Iâll give you that. You seemed so sweet and innocent, Jakeâs perfect blond angel, but that was just an illusion, wasnât it? Underneath that eager-to-please exterior was a woman who knew exactly what she was doing. You figured out everything Jake wanted, and then you gave it to him. You were smarter than I thought. But finally you made a mistake. You drove your car off the road and ended up where we could find you. So, game over.â His gaze hardened. âWhy donât you come clean, Sarah? Give Caitlyn back to Jake. Let him raise her. Iâm sure a baby must be cramping your style."
âI donât know what youâre talking about. What you say means nothing to me, and frankly, the person youâre describing doesnât feel like me."
He shook his head, his eyes glittering in disbelief. âDoesnât feel like you -- well, isnât that informative? Fine, you donât know anything about the past, so Iâll fill you in. I walked away before. I kept my mouth shut, because Jake was stupidly in love with you, but I will not stand by and let you hurt my brother again. I will do whatever it takes to get Caitlyn back for Jake. And you wonât stand in my way. Got it?"
There was no doubt about the threat in Dylanâs voice. Sarah had one more enemy to add to the rapidly growing list of people who didnât like her.
The door opened, and Jake walked in holding two cups of coffee. His eyes were weary, his face showing a dark shadow of beard across his jaw. As he handed Dylan a cup, he frowned. âI told you to wait for me before you talked to Sarah."
âI wanted to see her for myself,â Dylan said. âYouâre right: She looks like hell. But I donât feel one ounce of sympathy for her, and neither should you."
âI donât,â Jake replied.
While they reconfirmed their dislike of her, Sarah eyed their coffees with envy. She could have used a shot of caffeine to raise her energy to face the night ahead, but she wouldnât ask Jake to get her a cup. Heâd no doubt suspect some ulterior motive. Instead she asked, âDid you speak to Officer Manning again? He said he was going to come by, right?"
âHeâs downstairs,â Jake said. âLook, Sarah, I donât know if Dylan told you, but he arranged for the local news channel to send a reporter over here. They want to do a short interview with you, ask for the publicâs help in identifying you and locating Caitlyn. It will air on the six-oâclock and eleven-oâclock newscasts tonight."
âBut we already know who I am,â she said, suddenly terrified at the prospect of going on camera and talking to a reporter.
âSomeone may have seen you with Caitlyn at a
