hang out.â
âOkay,â Zoey said, trying to figure out if he was just saying it to be nice. âYou know, Iâm just not sure I want to rock the boat with the organizers, anyway. Iâd have to ask permission to sell the paintings, and they barely admitted me as it is.â
âIâll send you some photos of the paintings Iâd want to display, just in case you decide to call them,â Ezra said.
âOkay,â Zoey agreed.
Now what? she thought. Doing the gift fair was becoming more complicated by the minute!
At lunch the next day, she asked her friends what they would do.
âItâs not that I donât like his paintings,â she explained, having received Ezraâs photos by e-mail before school. âI really do. Itâs just . . . theyâre not exactly . . . Sew Zoey-ish, if you know what I mean. And if Iâm going to take a risk by spending all this money to rent a booth, I want it to look like the Sew Zoey blog came to life.â
âHold on!â Priti exclaimed. âWhy wouldnât you let your crush display his paintings? Itâll give you the perfect excuse to hang out!â
âThatâs what I thought at first,â Zoey said. âIt turns out he thought he was just going to leave them there and let me do all the workâuntil I mentioned hanging out, and then he said he would, and yeah, it would be fun. But I donât want him to feel like heâs forced into it.â
âI think you should stick to your original vision,â Kate said. âIf heâs really into you, heâll come visit, anyway.â
âOkay, so one for and one against,â Zoey said. âWhat do you think, Libby?â
Libby, whoâd been crunching on carrot sticks during the discussion, swallowed and shrugged.
âI donât know,â she said. âMaybe it would be cool to let Ezra show his paintings and spend time together. But I can see how youâre laying out all the money for the booth and want it to look perfect. So, basically, Iâm no help.â
âWhen do you have to decide?â Kate asked.
âSoon!â Zoey said. âLike, today, since I needto get permission, and the gift fair is a week from Friday! Plus, I still havenât decided exactly what to do for accessories. Iâve made some that Iâll sell, but I donât like them as much as the bracelets, and I donât think thereâs enough variety.â
âYou will figure it all out,â Libby said. âYou always do.â
It was true. Zoey did find ways to make things work. But there was always a first time for disaster, and Zoey was worried.
âWhy are you so grumpy faced?â Marcus asked when Zoey walked in after school. âCheer up, little sister!â
âI canât,â Zoey complained. âIâm stressing out about the gift fair. I donât know what to do.â
âWhatâs the problem?â Marcus asked. âI thought you got a booth? And you just have to make some accessories, right? Piece of cake.â
âI know.â Zoey sighed. âBut the only accessories Iâve made lately that I really like are those fabric bracelets.â
âWhatâs wrong with those?â Marcus asked.âDidnât you say your friends loved them and wear them every day?â
âYeah,â Zoey replied. âBut theyâre copies, basically. Iâm going in circles trying to decide if Iâm okay with selling them. Anyway, the real problem is that when I told Ezra all this, he suggested I sell his paintings in the booth as gifts, instead. And Iâm not sure if I want to. But I donât want to hurt his feelings, either.â
â Awkward. Trouble in paradise already,â Marcus joked. Then, seeing that Zoey really wasnât in the mood for humor, he asked, âSo what are the pros and cons?â
Zoey filled him in on the good and
