so he couldnât see them. He knew it would be too much work to turn. âOwen, whatââ a girlâs voice started.
Jesse realized he was not making a good first impression. âLet me explain,â he said, trying to focus his tired mind enough to come up with an explanation. âIââ
âWho are you?â a strong male voice demanded, interrupting him.
Jesse decided to attract their attention right away. âJesse. Iâve come to rescue you.â
Silence. âAre you sure you have that right?â Owen asked. âBecause weâre just fine. Youâre the one in trouble.â
Jesse just closed his eyes, trying to figure out how to explain. If only he knew .
âI donât trust him. How do you know he wonât kill us once we get him out?â the girl â Talia? â pointed out. âOr lead someone to us? He knows where we are now.â
Jesse fought a growing frustration. âWeâre here to rescue you, not kill you!â
âExplain yourself,â Nero ordered. It seemed like everything he said was an order. âQuickly.â
Jesse tried to think. This was not how he pictured their meeting with the missing squad. Besides, his head felt like it was full of the tar around him. âParvel got sick, so I went into the desertâ¦and we were almost executedâ¦a Patrol captain is chasing usâ¦and we went into the mountains with the dwarvesâ¦before escaping the Rebellionâ¦and finding the Forbidden Bookâ¦.â
He trailed off. I must sound like a madman . âItâs a long story,â he finished weakly. âSeveral long stories, actually.â
âParvel,â Talia muttered. âSilas and Rae are in his squad, arenât they?â
Something about the way Talia said their names made Jesse want to deny it. âYes?â
âExcellent,â Owen muttered, still flopped on the ground, almost at eye level with Jesse. âYou had to bring them up, didnât you?â
âI should have known,â Talia said. âThey always taunted us during training. Said that weâd fail in our quest. Rae especially. You say the others are nearby?â
âYes,â Jesse said, âin the ruins.â Something caught his eye, over in the sand of the tar pit bank. Odd . Was thatâ¦?
No. Your imagination. Thatâs all . But Jesse wasnât sure that it was. For a moment, he thought he had seen something moving in the sand of the bank.
âThen let them find you.â Taliaâs voice got more distant. Sheâs walking away . âI say weââ
The movement again, this time sending a trickle of sand down into the tar in front of Jesse. âThereâs something in the bank,â Jesse said, trying not to panic.
âDonât interrupt,â Talia said coolly.
âNo, thereâs something alive,â Jesse said, trying to back away fromâ¦whatever it was. He didnât care if it would make him sink deeper into the tar. âIn the bank.â
Owen winced. âNot good, not good.â He looked up. âYou two, get back over here and help me haul him up.â No movement. âNow!â
Apparently Owen, unlike Nero, didnât give orders very often, because Talia and Nero came over and grabbed on to the end of the staff. The force of the pull nearly tore Jesseâs arms out, but he held on.
He let go with one hand and grabbed at the edge of the bank, tearing away mossy plants. âStop it,â Owen shouted. He threw Jesseâs staff on the ground. âLet us pull you.â
The sound of more sand falling, then something like a hiss. âPull fast!â he yelled back.
Two pairs of arms grabbed him and the tar pit surrendered. Nero and Owen helped Jesse away from the edge.
âWatch yourselves.â Taliaâs voice. When Jesse looked up, he saw a girl aiming an arrowâ¦right at him.
He gasped and rolled to the side.
