there was a tree near the wall ahead that could easily be climbed, though it would be quite a jump to the other side.
âGuards posted on the other side of the wall?â she whispered.
âYes. Not a popular position. Very boring, apparently. And you have to stand the whole time.â
âFind out how many and where.â
âAlready on it.â
âA Ruined could take this wall down, right?â she asked. âAt least a piece of it?â
âDamian could take down a large chunk of it at full strength.â
âGood.â
They continued walking, Em making a note of how long it took to walk the entire perimeter. If a hasty escape was necessary, the wall would pose a significant problem.
âHow was the prince last night? You saw him, didnât you?â Aren asked.
âFine. Itâs just a shoulder injury.â She blew out a breath of air. âHe wants to talk to me about the Ruined.â
âWhat? How did that come up?â
âItâs my fault. I canât keep my mouth shut. I may have said they were murdering us.â
âMary would have hated the Ruined, Em. They murdered her parents.â
âSo? No one here ever met her. They donât know that for sure.â
âWas he mad? Was it like, âWeâll discuss this later, peasant. Now leave me to my murderingâ?â He lowered his voice in an impression of Cas and grinned.
âNo. It was more like he was intrigued. Like he was willing to talk about it,â she said, and Aren gave her a baffled look. âI know! I never considered the possibility that I could actually talk sense into him.â
âItâs not a possibility,â Aren said. âEven if Cas is willing to listen to you and the king died tomorrow, it wouldnât change anything. The kingâs advisers support the Ruined policies. Besides, heâs what . . . seventeen?â
âYeah.â
âHeâs been able to take the throne for two years. He was in those meetings when they decided. If he had something to say, he would have done it already.â
âTrue. Sympathy doesnât mean much if you donât take action.â She shuddered as the image of a shirtless Cas ran through her head. She didnât like him in her head.
âHave you heard anything about Olivia yet?â Aren asked.
âNo. Iâm waiting for a natural way to slide it into conversation. I donât want them getting suspicious. So far all anyone willtalk to me about is dresses and the wedding. They havenât even bothered to tell me the Olso warriors are coming. Iâve been practicing my surprised face.â She lifted her eyebrows, parting her lips dramatically. âHow is that?â
âTerrible. Donât do that.â
âMaybe Cas will remember to tell me today, since theyâre supposed to arrive very soon. Heâd barely spoken to me before yesterday, so I guess there wasnât much opportunity.â She scrunched up her face. âNow I think he likes me.â
âThat was the point, wasnât it?â
âI guess.â
He rubbed his hand across the back of his neck. âWe never talked about . . . uh . . . the sex part.â
âAnd we will continue to not talk about it.â
âAre you going to ask him to wait? I donât think thatâs unreasonable. You just met, after all.â
âAren, weâre not talking about it.â
âRight. Sorry.â He slid his hands in his pockets, taking a few steps away from her. âI have to get back. I told them I was just checking in with you, so theyâll expect me back soon.â He grinned. âPlus, we shouldnât be seen together too often. People will think weâre having sex.â
Em wrinkled her nose, trying to keep a smile off her face. âGross.â
âThe feeling is mutual.â
