out,â he said.
âI heard you had car trouble in Portland. I came to offer to look at it for you.â
Bill snapped his head up at that. âWhereâd you hear such a thing?â
âWalt told us this morning.â
âUs?â
âI was eating breakfast at Marcieâs. She was sitting with me.â He knew saying it that way made it sound better than the reality. But he wanted the old man to cut him some slack.
âMarcie knows?â
That surprised Zack. âWas it a secret?â
âNo! Of course not. Why would it be?â
âShe didnât know you were going to Portland.â
âNo reason she should. The carâs fine. I donât need you looking at anything of mine. Get out of here.â
Zack nodded once. âIâll be going. But if you change your mind, let me know. Iâm staying at Joeâs.â
Now he knew why Marcie had suggested he offer his help. She knew the reception heâd get. For a moment he felt a pang for the way things had turned out. In the past heâd been as welcome at the Wintersâ home as he had been in his own. It was more than Marcie heâd hurt, obviously. Could he make amends here, too?
Chapter Four
M arcieâs apartment seemed especially empty when she entered shortly before seven that night. She opened the windows to let the evening breeze blow through. Sheâd eaten at the café, and was not going to make a habit of ice cream every night. But after the bustle of the café, her quiet place seemed lonely.
The phone rang. Maud Stevens was on the other end.
âHave you heard from Gillian?â Maud asked. The older woman was going to be Gillianâs matron of honor. Maud had been best friends with Gillianâs great-grandmotherâthe two had gone to school together and remained friends until Sophieâs death earlier that year.
âNot directly, but Jenny talks to her almost every night. She and Joe finished closing down Gillianâs apartment and are on their way back.â
âGillian mentioned you and Jenny were picking out bridesmaid dresses. I do hope you two remember my age. I canât be wearing some low-décolletage dress.â
âNo, maâam, we have no low-cut dresses. The age range for this wedding party is seven to ninety-three. We have to accommodate all of us.â
âWell, good. And no green. I look sick as a dog if I ever wear green.â
Marcie smiled. âIâm sure once Gillian decides, sheâll have us all over her at her house to see, and we can veto anything we hate.â
âShe is such a dear. I just wish Sophie had met her.â
Marcie heard her sigh. âAt least Gillian knows a lot about her great-grandmother because of the stories youâre telling her.â
âThereâs that. I heard through the grapevine that rascal Zack Kincaid has come back. Is he staying for the wedding?â
âActually, I believe heâs to be the best man.â
The silence on the other end caused Marcie to smile again. She couldnât wait until Zack saw who he would be paired with.
âWell, that does beat all. Does he know Iâm matron of honor?â
âI donât believe he does, unless Jennyâs told him. It should be interesting, donât you think?â
âHe was wild as a boy. But good, too, you know that.â
âExcept when running out on a wedding with scarcely any notice,â Marcie said dryly. She remembered him as exciting and wild and so much fun she lived for the time they spent together.
âIâm sure he had his reasons. Do call and tell me if Gillian calls.â
âI will, Maud. You take care.â
Marcie had been to several weddings over the years as different classmates had married. The first had been the hardest, when Shirley Norris married Bruce Hartwell. It had been almost a year to the day after her own had been scheduled. She had declined all offers to be a
