out,” he said.
â€œI heard you had car trouble in Portland. I came to offer to look at it for you.”
Bill snapped his head up at that. “Where’d you hear such a thing?”
    â€œWalt told us this morning.”
    â€œUs?”
â€œI was eating breakfast at Marcie’s. She was sitting with me.” He knew saying it that way made it sound better than the reality. But he wanted the old man to cut him some slack.
    â€œMarcie knows?”
That surprised Zack. “Was it a secret?”
â€œNo! Of course not. Why would it be?”
â€œShe didn’t know you were going to Portland.”
â€œNo reason she should. The car’s fine. I don’t need you looking at anything of mine. Get out of here.”
Zack nodded once. “I’ll be going. But if you change your mind, let me know. I’m staying at Joe’s.”
Now he knew why Marcie had suggested he offer his help. She knew the reception he’d get. For a moment he felt a pang for the way things had turned out. In the past he’d been as welcome at the Winters’ home as he had been in his own. It was more than Marcie he’d hurt, obviously. Could he make amends here, too?

Chapter Four
M arcie’s apartment seemed especially empty when she entered shortly before seven that night. She opened the windows to let the evening breeze blow through. She’d eaten at the café, and was not going to make a habit of ice cream every night. But after the bustle of the café, her quiet place seemed lonely.
The phone rang. Maud Stevens was on the other end.
â€œHave you heard from Gillian?” Maud asked. The older woman was going to be Gillian’s matron of honor. Maud had been best friends with Gillian’s great-grandmother—the two had gone to school together and remained friends until Sophie’s death earlier that year.
â€œNot directly, but Jenny talks to her almost every night. She and Joe finished closing down Gillian’s apartment and are on their way back.”
â€œGillian mentioned you and Jenny were picking out bridesmaid dresses. I do hope you two remember my age. I can’t be wearing some low-décolletage dress.”
â€œNo, ma’am, we have no low-cut dresses. The age range for this wedding party is seven to ninety-three. We have to accommodate all of us.”
â€œWell, good. And no green. I look sick as a dog if I ever wear green.”
Marcie smiled. “I’m sure once Gillian decides, she’ll have us all over her at her house to see, and we can veto anything we hate.”
â€œShe is such a dear. I just wish Sophie had met her.”
Marcie heard her sigh. “At least Gillian knows a lot about her great-grandmother because of the stories you’re telling her.”
â€œThere’s that. I heard through the grapevine that rascal Zack Kincaid has come back. Is he staying for the wedding?”
â€œActually, I believe he’s to be the best man.”
The silence on the other end caused Marcie to smile again. She couldn’t wait until Zack saw who he would be paired with.
â€œWell, that does beat all. Does he know I’m matron of honor?”
â€œI don’t believe he does, unless Jenny’s told him. It should be interesting, don’t you think?”
â€œHe was wild as a boy. But good, too, you know that.”
â€œExcept when running out on a wedding with scarcely any notice,” Marcie said dryly. She remembered him as exciting and wild and so much fun she lived for the time they spent together.
â€œI’m sure he had his reasons. Do call and tell me if Gillian calls.”
â€œI will, Maud. You take care.”
Marcie had been to several weddings over the years as different classmates had married. The first had been the hardest, when Shirley Norris married Bruce Hartwell. It had been almost a year to the day after her own had been scheduled. She had declined all offers to be a
