in a store window day after day on her way back and forth from her job in a factory during the height of the Great Depression, she decided she just had to have them.â
âBut how could she affordââGrant started to ask.
âShe always had to give all her earnings to her father on payday, itâs trueââ
âSo he could drink it!â growled Enid, in disgust, and then swallowed down the rest of the wine in her glass.
Zoë smiled. âThatâs right. But this one week, she decided no . That it was her money and that she would spend it the way she wanted to. Soâ¦â
âSo?â Ava wanted to know.
âSo she stopped in the store and bought the shoes.â
A collective gasp came from the group.
âAnd her father?â asked Clarabelle. âWhat did she tell her father?â
âShe pretended she got mugged,â said Zoë.
âDid he believe her?â asked Amy.
âOh, no,â said Zoë.
âThen what?â asked Morty.
Zoë looked around before speaking. âThen he beat her, of course.â
Another gasp.
âBut it never mattered again, because after that, everything changed,â said Zoë. âMargarita, her real name, went out in the shoes the very next day, and she met Darryl Zanuck .â
âYou mean the big Hollywood producer?â asked Enid.
âThe same,â said Zoë. âHe offered her a role in his latest film, and she left for Hollywood two weeks later.â
âI heard that story!â said Clarabelle. âI remember that!â
âI donât quite remember it like that,â said Morty, looking a little confused.
There was a moment of silent reflection, but only a moment.
âAre you going to buy the shoes, Amy?â asked Clarabelle.
âThey could be the ones!â gushed Enid.
âBuy the shoes, Amy!â urged Ava.
Amy tried to make sense of it all, while trying to pull herself out of the spotlight. âI donât think I knew any of that, Zoë. Thanks. But two hundred fifty dollars for shoes. I mean, come on .â
âSome people just donât understand the power of shoes,â Lauren said, catching the end of the conversation.
âPersonally, I donât think all that much of it,â said Zoë. âYet I canât scientifically rule it out.â
Brendan returned with Joshua. Jane, looking annoyed, walked a few steps behind them.
âSo whoâs taking over for Heimlich?â Joshua asked.
âRight now? His classes are being covered by a few of his graduate students and some other members of the department. But going forwardââ
âWhat about you?â Lauren asked. âAre you taking on any of them?â
âMe?â Amy blushed. âOh, no. I couldnât possible teach his classes.â
âBut donât you have a Masters degree in English Lit?â asked Lauren.
âAll she has to do is defend her dissertation at this point and then itâs PhD all the way.â
âJane!â said Amy, horrified.
âWell, Iâm sorry, Amy. But itâs true. She downplays how far sheâs gotten, and how brilliant her paper was. All she needs to do now is defend it.â
All eyes were now on her. âI have a little, uh, stage fright.â
âPerhaps if you had the shoesâ¦â mused Clarabelle.
âWhatâs that?â asked Joshua.
âOh nothing, Pappy,â said Zoë. âDonât worry about it.â

After dinner everyone moved into the living room for coffee. Jane sat down on the couch next to Amy and tucked her feet under her as she sipped her tea. She reached out and gave Amy a gentle stroke on the arm. âHow are you doing?â she asked.
âIâm okay,â said Amy.
âHey, Iâm sorry about before. About your dissertation. I didnât mean to throw you under the bus like that.â
âI think that was the least
