control. Not only did I kiss The Don’s forbidden daughter, I almost fucked her. I know I was abrupt with her and maybe downright cruel, but I had to do it. It was the smartest thing to do. Keeping my distance all these years had been hard, but after what happened in the cellar, it became a whole lot worse.
Still tasting her in my mouth, her sweet scent intoxicated my brain. I was suffocating in wicked thoughts about her. At that moment, she was the only thing that filled my head and the only thing I could focus on. Something had to be done. I couldn't allow this to affect my job and my position in the famiglia . I was behaving like some sex crazed teenager.
Clearing the treacherous thoughts from my mind, I grabbed the beer I’d initially gone to the cellar for and followed through the door that Lorena had just exited. I found myself face to face with Uncle Joey. The cantankerous old man wore a sly smile on his face.
“What where you doing down there, Capo?” He spat out my name like it was an insult. Uncle Joey didn’t seem to like anyone but his son. With a chip on his shoulder, which had been there for a long time, it all lead back to his brother’s death and Sebastiano becoming The Don. I, being The Capo, didn’t make it any easier. In fact, it was probably killing the bastard. I was sure he'd rather see his son as Sebastiano’s right-hand man.
I didn’t have to answer to him, but I knew answering was the easiest way to get him to shut up. “We ran out,” I said, lifting the carton of beer as evidence.
“Funny that. I could swear Lorena just came out of that cellar looking suspiciously flushed and covered in the same icing sugar you seem to be covered in,” Joey said, giving me a pointed look.
The pack of icing sugar Lorena had taken with her had been abandoned on the kitchen bench top. I placed the carton next to the icing sugar, before opening it and placing the beers in the fridge, leaving a six pack on the side so I could take them to the guys.
Nonna , who had been washing some dishes in the sink, jumped into the conversation before I could say anything. “Don’t be silly, Joey. I know you saw the split in the bag when Lorena brought it up.”
“Lorena mentioned needing a shower. Since when do you need a shower from just a little icing sugar? It brushes off unless it gets wet,” Joey said, once again insinuating something untoward had happened. He was so close to the truth that I was starting to wonder if he’d been spying on us somehow. I wouldn’t put it past him. He was a sly bastard.
“Joey, you need to stop before you say something I can’t ignore or forgive,” I snapped as I calmly cracked open a beer. Internally, I was far from calm. He was so close to the truth it scared me. If he was speculating and could see the tension between Lorena and me, it made me question what the fuck other people saw.
Aldo and Paulie walked into the kitchen with a laughing Lorena. She’d changed and showered, her wet hair cascading over her shoulders. Her eyes met mine and her smile instantly disappeared. The obvious change in her demeanour had Paulie questioning her. “Lorena, what’s wrong?” He placed his arm around her shoulders, offering her comfort.
Snapping out of it, she glanced at Paulie, plastered on a fake smile and shook her head. “Nothing, I…I, um, rushed to have that shower that I’m just feeling a touch dizzy. And I was just thinking how strange it is to have a party and not have to worry about my mother turning up to spoil it.” I knew she was lying. Yeah, her shower may have been a quick one, but I knew it was seeing me again that had changed her mood. She probably expected me to have left after our little session in the cellar. Damn, maybe I should leave . Things were strained between us. I needed to get out of there so she could enjoy her baby brother’s first birthday. If I stayed around any longer, I would be the one taking her mother’s place and ruining the
