arm, I finally got what she was trying to say. It would be a pleasure to share a room with Ethan but only if he felt the same. As I climbed the stairs, I smiled at the deceitfulness and crafty maneuver that she and Mark had pulled. They were at it again but this time I couldn’t help feeling a sort of kinship towards them.
The plane took off and I looked at Ethan’s seat but he had his head in his laptop and looked consumed by whatever he was working on. He was either putting the final touches on his book to make it as perfect as it could be or he was he still pouting because of what Ronnie said to him in the car. If it was the latter then it would be too bad that he couldn’t take a little teasing. It was becoming apparent that he would just have to get used to it with the three of us.
Ronnie yelled out over the roar of the engine, “Ethan, Emily could use a little company and maybe you’d like that too.” He looked up from what he was doing and glared at Ronnie which made her turn right back around and start giggling like a schoolgirl.
I heard Mark say under his breath, “Ronnie, you shouldn’t tease him like that, you know he doesn’t take that very kindly.” Stifling the giggles, she lay back in her seat and closed her eyes with a pair of headphones over her ears.
I took the initiative and a deep breath as I moved down to the seat across from Ethan’s. “Look, Ronnie was just acting like Ronnie and she just likes to push people’s buttons until she gets a reaction. The best thing to do when she comes after you like that is to just ignore her or play along like it doesn’t bother you...just some useful advice to make this trip more enjoyable for all of us.”
The only words out of his mouth the entire trip were, “Thanks, Em, I’ll take that into consideration.” He then went back to work on his laptop and I felt a little uncomfortable sitting so close to him. I moved away and returned to my original seat and sat back letting the drone of the engine put me to sleep.
Ronnie was now shaking me awake and informing me that the plane had just landed and we were to disembark. I shook my head, unbuckled my belt and followed Ronnie out and down the stairs to an awaiting limousine. As I got in I could tell that Ethan had softened a little, and was now talking in hushed tones to Mark while Ronnie and I had a conversation all our own.
“Ronnie, I hope we will have time to go skiing because I am looking forward to getting my feet in the snow again. It may take me some time to get used to it but I am sure that I will be able to keep up.”
“I don’t see why we can’t do that. It might be a little difficult for you since you were better on the snowboard so you might need a lesson or two to get started.” She winked at me giving me the impression that she thought Ethan could be of service in this regard.
“Is there anything that Ethan is not good at? If that’s the case then he is really starting to annoy me.”
“There are many things that he is not good at but skiing is not one of them so just enjoy your time together, Em.” Ethan started to walk towards Ronnie and me.
“Em, they tell me that it’s been a while since you’ve put on a pair of skis so seeing that I am quite proficient on the slopes I will be more than happy to show you the ropes.”
“Um, okay, I guess I really don’t have much of a choice.”
Ronnie said, “Don’t worry, you are in good hands with an instructor like him and maybe there is room for additional training?” She looked directly at me with that mischievous glint in her eyes. “It’s not exactly like Ethan’s tutelage will be unwanted and being the talented woman that you are I am sure that you could more than return the favor in some other way, Em.” She was throwing his own words back in his face and alluding to the fact that there was something between us that he wasn’t willing to admit to himself. Although I got the meaning of what she was trying to say,
