there that will help you live longer? Find out how much it cost and Iâll pay for it.â
My mom grabbed both of my hands and held them inside of her tiny hands. âItâs stage four; thereâs nothinâ they can do for me,â she replied.
I refused to believe what she had just told me. âWell canât you find out, Ma?â I said as tears filled my eyes. I refused to cry; thatâs all one of these niggas needed to see and I would be bitch meat for real.
âVomo, baby, Iâve tried everything,â she said shaking her head.
âHow long?â I asked carefully, not knowing if I would be able to handle her answer.
âAny day. Iâm just waitinâ,â she replied.
âWow, Ma, why you wait so long to tell me?â I asked, hurt.
âBecause I wanted you to have a good visit, baby. I didnât wanna worry you with all this mess. You got enough on your plate already,â she said, forcing a weak smile.
I didnât know how to react knowing this might be the last time I seen my mom. âWho gonâ take care of me when you gone?â I asked.
âYou a grown man, Vomo. Iâve been preparinâ you for my death ever since you were a little boy. Do you remember me always tellinâ you I wasnât gonâ always be around for you to lean on?â
I slowly shook my head yes. I could remember hearing my mom telling me that at least a thousand times but it never registered until now that it was really happening.
âVisit over,â the CO called out.
âListen, baby, I just want to apologize to you in person for not beinâ a good mother, but all I knew how to do was to do my best. Iâm goinâ to put your money in a bank account so it will be there when you get out. I will keep puttinâ money on your books until Iâm not able to.â
âOkay,â I responded, not knowing what else to say.
âPlease, promise me that you will get your life together and take good care of my grandbabies when they let you outta here.â
âI promise,â I said, hoping I could keep it.
âVisitors, letâs go!â the CO yelled loudly.
My mom stood up and wrapped her frail arms around me. âI love you, Vomo.â
âI love you too, Ma,â I said as she turned to walk away.
She looked back at me one last time before heading out the door. My heart was so heavy as I watched her walk away. I still couldnât wrap my mind around the fact that my mom would no longer be around to rub my bruises or heal my broken heart. She was all I had. With that being said, I went back to the pod and waited for my cellie to leave for rec and for the first time in a long time, I cried like a bitch!

âBlu, where the fuck the rest of my shit at!â my mom busted into my room yelling, waking me from a deep sleep.
âWhat shit you talkinâ âbout?â I asked annoyed.
âMy dope, thatâs what shit Iâm talkinâ about,â she yelled.
âI donât got yoâ shit,â I said, frowning.
âI just reweighted my shit and itâs all short. Blu, you got my shit and I want it!â my mom said angrily.
âI donât know what the fuck you talkinâ about,â I said, lying back down and closing my eyes. Big mistake; my mom jumped on top of me and began choking the shit out of me.
âBitch, you think Iâm stupid donât you?â she said as she continued choking me.
âMom, get off her,â Miguel yelled, running into my room, trying to pull my mom off of me.
âIâm âbouta kill this bitch,â my mom said as she choked me with one hand and slapped me senseless with the other.
Craig must have heard all the commotion going on in my bedroom because he rushed in too. âStacey, get the fuck off that girl,â he said, using all of his strength to pull her off of me, with the help of Miguel, knocking
