hands on the bed next to her hips. Her arms remained around his neck, their faces only inches apart. âI donât even know what I deserve.â
âYou deserve better,â she said with her eyes intent. âI know LaToria is my best friend and all, but right is right and wrong is wrong. Itâs like . . . I donât know who she is.â
Trevon lowered his head, closing his eyes. âI donât know what to do, Jurnee.â
âWeâll figure it out,â she assured him, easing her arms from his neck only to rub his arms.
âI gotta find a place to stay, and ifââ
âThat isnât Kandiâs place, remember? Itâs Janelleâs name on the title, and Iâm sure sheâll let you stay here once we explain what happened.â
Trevon stood and then crossed the room. Stopping at the dresser, he saw a broken man in the mirror. âI was a fool to even think she really loved me.â He picked up a picture that he took with LaToria last year.
âDonât think like that. Sheâs the one with the issues, not you,â she told him.
âWhere do I start?â he asked.
âYou start by moving on with your life. You canât let this eat at you, Trevon. I know it hurts because I know how you feel about Kandi.â
He shrugged, placing the picture face down on the dresser.
âYou still have your careerââ
âI canâtââ
âYes you can!â She came to her feet. âDonât let this break you!â
He turned to face her. âWhy do you even care?â he asked again.
Jurnee looked at him eyes to eyes. âWhy shouldnât I care?â
âDonât answer a question by asking one.â
âYou want me to be honest?â
He shook his head. âNo. I need you to be honest.â
She crossed her arms, lowering her eyes to the floor. âI donât know why I care, but I do, okay?â
âLaToria said she cared about me too, so howââ
âIâm not her!â She looked up.
Trevon shifted his feet. âIâm sorry âbout that.â
âAre you gonna be okay?â
âI guess. It just seems like none of this shit is real.â He shook his head. âOne minute Iâm about to get an engagement ring and the next . . . I just need to get outta this fuckinâ house before I spaz out.â
âWhere are you going?â she asked, watching him pick up his keys.
He shrugged. âI donât know.â
Standing in place, she wondered how he would feel if she spoke the truth on why she cared about him. Assuming the worst, she stayed quiet as he made his exit.
Trevon was trudging down the hall when Jurnee called out his name. Coming to a stop, he turned. She eased up to him, her eyes still wet from all her crying.
âDo you want me to be here when you get back?â she asked softly.
Trevon sighed. âI donât care, Jurnee. I . . . I just donât care.â
âThatâs the last thing you should do is not care,â Jurnee said.
âSo what do you suggest?â
Jurnee smiled. âLet me go with you. How about we get out of this house and grab a bite to eat?â
Trevon sighed and thought about Jurneeâs suggestion. âWhy not?â he said as he fought to hide his pain over LaToria. âLetâs go before I lose my fuckinâ mind.â

âSheâs not answering any of my calls,â Trevon told Jurnee as they later sat inside his XJL outside of the Sushi Samba Restaurant.
Jurnee could hear the pain in his voice. âShe canât hide,â she said, rubbing his shoulder. âLike I told you in the restaurant, Martellus has a record company, so weâll just reach himââ
âAnd say what?â Trevon looked at Jurnee. âYou think Iâma ask for LaToria back?â
âBut I thought you wantedââ
âIt donât matter no more. I
