In the meantime I’m assisting with classes while I work on my last degree.” Sylvia noted he didn’t mention anything about the business or the millions of dollars he had inherited from his Grandfather.
“Sounds like you’re a busy guy.” She was relieved to hear he wasn’t planning on a life with the Church. That might have made the task of seducing him much harder. It was no explanation for his retained virginity, which still baffled her.
“I am. But it doesn’t mean I don’t have time to grab a coffee with a damsel in distress,” he joked, refe rring to their initial meeting.
“I may not be a ‘damsel in distress’ today, but I am glad to see you again,” Sylvia confessed boldly. She had to remind herself to keep breathing as she waited for Mason’s reply. It was possible she had overstepped a boundary already, but she hoped not. She got the feeling he would be receptive to her honesty, and he was.
“I’m glad to see you again too,” he replied softly. “I don’t know why our paths crossed as they did but I have a feeling I’ll be glad it happened. There’s something different about you, Sylvia. I don’t know what it is but I like it.”
Sylvia cast her eyes downward as she smiled demurely. This was going better than she ever could have hoped.
“I need to tell you something up front here. I think honesty in a relationship is extremely important, so I want to be honest with you.”
Uh-oh. Sylvia had no idea where Mason was going with this and she wasn’t sure she liked it but she knew she had to play the game.
“ I really appreciate that. I agree honesty’s very important.”
“Okay, this is kind of hard for me, and I won’t get into all of it right now, but … I haven’t been in a relationship in about ten years. I don’t mean to put it all out there right from the start, but I think you deserve to know that, Sylvia. I’m interested in you, romantically, but I fear I’m a bit rusty at the whole thing.” Mason’s piercing blue eyes searched hers as she took in what he had just said.
No romantic relationship in ten years. Apparently no sexual relationships in that time frame, or ever. Yet there he was, looking like he had stepped out of a GQ magazine, all good looks and casual hotness. In Sylvia’s world, where the men all couldn’t wait to bang the first girl that said ‘yes’, she felt like she had just discovered something entirely wonderful and unknown.
“ I understand. I haven’t had a meaningful relationship in a long time either. I feel a bit out of practice myself!”
“So … we’ll take it slow, then? See how it goes?”
“I’d like that. To us- going slow.” Sylvia raised her coffee cup upwards to toast Mason. She didn’t want to go slow, she wanted to take him into the restroom and show him what he’d been missing all of those long years while she drained every last drop of Innocent energy from him. Not yet, but someday, and maybe in a place where she could take her time with him, instead of a public bathroom.
“To us, may we see where this takes us.” Mason returned the faux toast and they both sipped their coffee in amicable silence for a moment before engaging in the usual small talk people use when getting to know someone new.
He checked his watch. “I hate to eat and run, but I’m behind schedule today, and I’ve got to go assist with another class shortly. When can I see you again?”
“My schedule is pretty flexible this weekend, how about then?”
“I have to double-check my schedule but I’m sure we can work something out.” He waited until she finished the last bite of her bagel before standing up. “Can I hail a cab for you?”
Sylvia nodded enthusiastically. With a Hunter after her a cab ride home would be the safest thing. The Hunter. She had managed to forget about him for a bit while she was chatting with Mason, but she regretted letting herself be so sloppy. She needed to have her guard up at all times until the police
