Oliviaâs front steps.
âHey, you guys. I never told you about the great idea I had,â said Flora. She glanced behind her at Robby, who looked away from her.
âWhat great idea?â asked Nikki.
âMin was telling Ruby and me how every Halloween she dresses like the Wicked Witch of the West from
The Wizard of Oz
and Gigi dresses like Glinda. So I thought maybe the three of us and Ruby could be Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow.â She glanced over her shoulder again. âWe need someone to be the Wizard,â she added. âI wonder who that could be.â
Robby glared off into the distance.
âBut,â said Nikki, âI donât know if I can dress up. Like I said.â
âItâs okay. It was just an idea.â
âIf I can, though,â Nikki went on, âMae will probably have to come trick-or-treating with me. I couldnât leave her behind.â
âMae could be Toto!â cried Olivia.
âWell â¦â said Nikki.
âDo you really think you might be able to come?â asked Flora.
âMaybe.â
âWe donât want you to get in trouble,â added Olivia.
Nikki let out a huge sigh. âIf Iâm going to ask about this, Iâll have to do it very carefully. Iâll talk to Mom first.â She sighed again. âThe problem is that Mom canât really stand up to my father.â
âIâm back!â said Lydia. âRobby, your motherâs leaving now. She said your dad will be home in two hours. Guess what. We get to start dinner. What do you want to make?â
Robby brightened. âCan we have pizza?â
âFrozen pizza? Sure. Weâll make a salad, too, okay?â
âOkay.â
Lydia sat on the lawn with Olivia and Nikki and Flora. Every so often a maple leaf drifted to the ground. Lydia sniffed the air. âSmells good,â she said. âIsnât it weird how you can actually smell the seasons? You know â how spring smells different from summer, and autumn has its own smell, and winter smells like snow, even though snow doesnât have a smell?â
âMmm,â said Flora.
âRobby, come join us.â Lydia patted the ground beside her.
âAll right.â Robby left the steps and plopped onto the grass between Nikki and Lydia.
Around them, Ruby and Lacey and Henry and Jack and Travis and Mathias and Alyssa ran and shouted and laughed.
âA firefighter needs a hose!â
âI know what we can make your flame hat out of â felt.â
âWho has a wand? I need a wand!â
âMaybe I should be a princess instead. That way, I would get to wear a crown and oh, oh! I could wear my ballet slippers!â
Robby looked seriously at Lydia for several moments. At last he said, âLydia, could you please not call me a kid? Or talk about baby-sitting?â
âOkay,â said Lydia. âBut, Robby, wonât you tell me whatâs wrong? You never minded when I sat for you before.â
âThat was when I went to high school. Now I go to the little kidsâ school again. It just ⦠makes me feel like a baby.â
âOh,â said Lydia. âI see.â
âAre
you
going to go trick-or-treating?â Robby asked her.
âWell ⦠no.â
âAre you going to wear a costume?â
Lydia looked at the ground and flushed. âUm, I donât know. I got asked to this Halloween party. But Iâm probably not going to go.â
Flora glanced at Nikki and Olivia, and Olivia raised her eyebrows.
âOkay, hereâs the thing, Robby,â said Lydia. âHalloween is a fun holiday. You should do whatever you want. If you want to get dressed up, you should. If you want to go trick-or-treating, you should. Donât worry about what other people think.â
âThatâs easy for you to say,â muttered Robby.
âNot really,â replied
