“Tierney,” I said. Regardless of anything, I hated seeing her cry. “Don’t get upset.”

“I never stopped loving you, Trenton,” she said, holding back raw emotion. “When I went to college, when I met my husband. Even on my wedding day, I thought of nothing but you. I knew marrying my ex was a mistake. It should’ve been us. He never loved me half as much as you did. He never looked at me the way you used to.”

The waitress returned with Tierney’s mocha, and Tierney wasted no time getting up and slipping her coat over her shoulders. She reached into her purse and pulled out a crisp bill and slapped it on the table. She adjusted her hair over her coat collar and buttoned herself up. She couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

“Why are you in such a hurry?” I asked. “I thought we were going to catch up?”

    “I can’t,” she said, tears in her eyes. “I-I just … can’t.”

With that, Tierney was gone. Just as quickly as she’d come back into my life, she’d vanished into thin air. I slapped some cash on the table and waited a minute. I didn’t want her to think I was chasing after her. I wasn’t. She was right. Her timing was all off.

If Brenna was pregnant, I needed to focus on her for the next year. Tierney broke my heart into a million pieces, forever changing my outlook on love and happiness and what I wanted from life. She didn’t get to just whisk herself into my life and turn it upside down. She didn’t get that privilege.

But damn if she didn’t look amazing. My lips curled into a smile as the thought of plowing her pussy slipped through my mind. And I didn’t feel guilty at all. I had become the monster Tierney had created. I was a product of that brokenhearted summer in the Hamptons.

If I hurried up, I could still catch her.

I paced the kitchen of Trenton’s penthouse in nothing but one of his buttoned down shirts. Last night was our first attempt at getting pregnant. The sex was so intense that I passed out immediately and woke up naked in his room. Alone. He jetted out first thing that morning, and I was quite sure it was work related.

I rifled through his refrigerator and pulled out fresh orange juice and eggs. I was going to have to start eating better if I was to create this baby for him. No more ramen for me.

I pulled out a skillet and turned on a burner, cracking an egg over the edge. The kitchen was rather chilly that December morning, and the thought of doing the nasty with him later that night to warm up sounded more and more appealing.

Trenton said he wanted to do it as much as possible. He wanted to keep it fun. Keep the pressure to a minimum. I had to get creative. Mix things up. We couldn’t do it in his bed every time.

I paced the kitchen as the eggs cooked in the pan and found a little note on the counter by the phone chargers. I flipped open the note to find a credit card and a small letter from Trenton.

“Your allowance. Spend it wisely. And let me know if you need more.”

“What?” I said out loud, my lips curling into a smile. “Is this real life?”

I did a quick little happy dance as my fingers gripped the smooth plastic. I didn’t dare ask him what the limit was, but my impression was there was no limit.

I ate my breakfast in a hurry and jumped in the shower. I needed new clothes. I needed sexier things for our little romps in the hay. I needed a lot of things.

I hit the snowy streets of Manhattan an hour later, credit card tucked neatly away in my purse. I always hated those little trust fund bitches I went to college with, but I was always secretly jealous. To be kept by someone. To have the whole world at your fingertips. To have an unlimited supply of power and money. Who would ever say no to that? My eyes watered briefly as I thought about how my mother must have felt when Mr. Ellsworth was promising her the
