think Geoff or his constructed Christine are murderers.â
Libby giggled. âConstructed Christine! I like that. She was, wasnât she? I wonder what attracted her to bumptious Geoff?â
âMoney,â said Fran.
âBut out here? Sheâs more Marbella than remote Turkish village.â
âEscaping something?â suggested Fran. âIn which case that could be the reason theyâre a closed community.â
Libby gasped. âYou mean like the Costa del Crime?â
âDonât they say ex-pats are often trying to escape something?â
âYes â the weather, usually,â said Libby.
âAlec Wilson himself might have been trying to escape something.â Fran stopped and looked at Libby.
âAnd whatever it was caught up with him?â Libby stopped too. âActually, that makes more sense than anything else.â
âI expect Commander Smith will look into his background,â said Fran, resuming her now slower pace down the drive, âwhich the local force would never have done.â
âDo you think itâs more likely to be someone or something from his past than something or someone from here?â
âItâs as likely, anyway,â said Fran. âI expect our Johnny will look into it.â
Back at Jimmyâs they joined the others for lunch and brought them up to date on the morningâs happenings.
âSo now weâve got a high-ranking British police officer involved,â said Ben. âI donât know how you do it.â
âIt wasnât us!â said Libby indignantly. âIt was the consulate.â
âAnd they felt it was necessary because?â asked Peter.
âThe local force wouldnât have looked into his background, and we knew heâs been in touch with his long lost mum, so we need to find her,â said Libby.
âNothing to do with nosing out a murderer?â said Harry.
âThe consulate want him to do that, of course,â said Fran, refusing to be roused.
âAnd heâs actually asked you to help search the victimsâ houses?â Peter sounded incredulous.
âHe says the Jandarma wouldnât do it properly.â Libby was defensive. âAnd they wouldnât know if they found anything because they canât read English.â
âThere is that,â said Guy. âDid you tell him about your previous adventures?â
âYes. Martha had already told him a bit,â said Fran, âalthough I donât know why.â
âBecause we were investigating,â said Libby. âIt was very sensible of her.â
âBecause now you can be as nosy as you like,â said Ben.
âAll right, all right.â Libby sighed. âDonât forget youâre all just as interested. Whereâs Betty? We ought to tell her. She took us to Mahmudâs place.â
âGreta and Tom dragged her off to the village,â said Harry. âWalter refused to go and is sulking down by the pool.â
Libby peered. âSo he is. I donât know how she puts up with it. He doesnât seem to like anything.â
âI went over and asked him if heâd like to join us for lunch, but he said no, he didnât eat lunch.â Peter shook his head. âWhich is a lie. Weâve seen him.â
âOh, forget about him. Weâll probably see Betty and Greta and Tom later. Weâll tell them then.â Fran pushed back her chair. âIâm going to lie on a sunbed, have a swim, and then a cup of tea.â
âUnless weâre summoned, of course,â said Libby at exactly the same time as Jimmy called out from his office.
âLibby! Fran! Thereâs a Mr Smith on the phone for you.â
Chapter Nine
âIâll pick you up in ten minutes. That OK?â
âNow?â said Libby. âWe are on holiday, Mr Smith.â
âBut you were already asking questions, werenât you. So why
