enough as it is. Jesse Rinehart, the owner of Happy Trails Horse Camp, asked if I could continue to help out over the summer even though she knows Iâve been going to the rodeos on weekends, and during the week I help out the ColâÂâ
âYouâll have to tell the Collinses you need to focus on your priorities,â her father said, and Mrs. Lane and Harley nodded in agreement. âLet them find someone else to give their guests weekly lessons.â
Sammy Jo shook her head. âThey need me.â
âYou canât do everything.â
Was that what this was all about? Her fatherâs way of getting her to stop spending time at the Collinsesâ? How could he do this to her? First heâd brought Harley over, hoping to distract her, and now a horse?
She dismounted, handed the black horseâs reins back to Harley, and drew in a deep breath to steady her anger.
âWell?â her father asked. âWhat do you think of Thunder?â
âHeâs a fine horse,â she told him. âOne who deserves to be ridden. But it wonât be by me.â
âBut heâs the best barrel racer in the county,â Winona protested, her face aghast.
Sammy Jo would have argued in Tangoâs defense but didnât want to offend the woman any more than necessary. âMrs. Lane, the truth is, Iâve decided Iâm not going to compete in any more rodeos this year.â
âWhat?â her father demanded. âYouâre not serious!â
She lifted her chin and looked him in the eye. âI am.â
Taking her arm, he pulled her out of earshot of the others. âYou havenât missed a year in over a decade.â
âWell, then, maybe itâs time,â Sammy Jo said, keeping her voice low. âThereâs more to life than rodeo.â
âA year ago you would have sworn differently.â
âYouâre right,â she agreed. âBut now things have changed. Iâve changed. I want . . . more.â
âItâs because of those Collinses, isnât it?â he demanded. âYouâd give up rodeo to be with them?â
âYes, I would. Because I care about them, and since their previous ranch managers left town with their money their guest ranch is struggling.â
Her father smirked. âNothing you do will be able to help them. Youâll just be wasting your time.â
âWhy?â she challenged. âDid you delay the filing of their building permit on purpose?â
This was not how sheâd envisioned the conversation when sheâd rehearsed it earlier that day. However, she couldnât back down now.
âI may have misplaced their paperwork for a few days,â he admitted.
âBut itâs filed now?â she pressed, hoping to be able to give Luke the news.
He hesitated. âWell, not yet. I still need to go over the fine print and make sure all is in order.â
âWhen? By the end of this week?â
He inclined his head, ever so slightly.
âGive me your word.â
âI give you my word, the Collins permit will be filed by the end of the week,â he said, then frowned. âBut that doesnât mean theyâll get a new one. Their application still has to go through several of our departments.â
âI understand,â she said, and smiled. âThank you, Daddy.â
âYou shouldnât be thanking me,â he scolded. âYou should be riding rodeo.â
âAnd you ,â she said, reaching up to give her father a quick kiss on the cheek, âshould be making friends, not enemies.â
âThe Collinses and I will never be friends,â he warned.
âWhy?â she pleaded.
âI donât want to talk about it,â he replied.
Sammy Jo noted his troubled expression and didnât press him further. Sheâd already won one battle today, and for now, that was enough. Sheâd have to discover the
