killer spun with a crazy grace. Jumping up, spinning, his body contorting in ways that defied belief and gravity. Another guard, a big fucking brute, dropped.
None of which helped Olivia. The open cell door gaped, a barely panting Makl in front of it.
Olivia, however, dangled off the ground in the grip of the one guard still standing. She knew in Makl’s place what she would have chosen.
He surprised her, though. Makl turned around. Lips split in a wild grin, eyes shining with a savage
brightness, he displayed pointed teeth – sharp, sharklike teeth. “Let the girl go and I’ll give you a head start.”
There went her ability to breathe as the arm around her neck tightened.
“The female stays.”
Shaking his head, Makl let out a dramatic sigh. “Why does no one ever take the head start?” Faster
than she could follow, he sprang at them. Makl swung his slim bar and it slammed across the knuckles of the smelly alien holding her. With a yelp, he let go. She hit the floor and struggled to take in a wheezing breath.
Long, lean legs straddled her, Makl standing over her as he took care of the last guard. She
covered her head lest boots trample her, but somehow, she remained untouched. A thump and she peeked
through her fingers to see the sightless gaze of the last guard.
Violence came so easily to Makl. She swallowed the bile threatening to rise. “Did you have to kill
them all?”
“Mercenary rule number four. Never leave any of the enemy behind you alive lest they come back
to kill you.”
“There are mercenary rules?”
“Yes. But now’s not the time to learn them. I’ll loan you the book later if you’d like.”
He owned a book? “You can read?” She couldn’t help the sarcastic retort, her mind’s way of
dealing with the trauma around her.
“And write. Is now really the time for me to list my extensive accomplishments?”
“What do you know, you’re not just pretty.” She patted him on the cheek.
He growled. “I don’t know how I ever mistook you for an innocent virgin. Come. We don’t have
much time before our escape is discovered.”
He held out his hand and she looked at it, feeling once again that an omen hung over her head, a
giant blinking sign that warned she stood on the brink of change. If I go with him… She might just end up in his bed finishing the act they started – I’d be sleeping with a certifiable killer . If she didn’t, she’d meet up with Ifruum at their prearranged meeting spot in case of calamity and retire on her earnings.
How boring. Nothing like the pulse-pounding action she’d experienced since she’d met Makl. Did
she have to remove herself to a life of tranquility right away? After all, I did promise to help him with something if we escaped. As fellow thieves of a sort, didn’t their code have some rule about honor among…?
About to slip her hand into his in silent acceptance of her fate, a siren blazed to life. “Frukx it all.
I didn’t expect them to notice the guards’ demise so quick. I’ve no time to wait on your feminine games.
We leave now.” In true caveman style, he upended her over his shoulder despite her squealed, “Don’t you dare.”
“Oh, stuff it. A deal is a deal. I told you I needed your help. You agreed so long as we escaped.
Congratulations. We’re escaping. Now, make it good for the cameras, would you? I’ve got a reputation to create.”
“A reputation based on molesting and kidnapping fellow convicts?” she grumbled as she
squirmed, not because he told her to, but because she didn’t enjoy being carted about like a sack of
potatoes. She also squirmed because she’d never had someone toss her over a shoulder with such
effortless ease and as shoulders went, his was quite nice.
“Molesting? Ha. You wish. Anyone could tell you enjoyed yourself.”
“I was faking it.”
“Only parts of it. Or do I need to throw you up against a wall and show you just how much you
didn’t fake?”
Please do.
