calls thereâd been in the past four years with various patients. Nor would she tell him. âYou know why Iâm riding with Gramps. Heâs doing okay. Iâll probably turn him loose soon.â
Her father cursed a blue streak, making Rafe laugh.
âYes, itâs funny until you have to live with it,â Jefferson said.
âI hope my father lives long enough for that to be a problem, sir.â
Jefferson looked into the distance for a few seconds then nodded. âWell, weâve both lost our mothers, havenât we? Not in any hurry for our dads to go.â His voice was raspy with emotion.
âNo, sir.â
He cleared his throat. âSo, you coming home, girl? Your mother misses you.â
Which was code for âyour father misses youâ or âyour father wants you to get the hell away from Rafe Mendoza.â
âSorry, Dad. I canât,â she said. âIâll check with her on coming over another night.â
âYou got your car?â
She smiled. âItâs a five-minute walk home.â
âHop in. Iâll drive you.â
She figured heâd thought Rafe was going to take her. âI want to walk, but thanks. See you later.â
He aimed a âso longâ toward her and got into his truck as she and Rafe watched. He pulled out slowly. She could see him looking at his rearview mirror.
âYou know he was stalling, waiting for me to give up and leave,â Rafe said.
There was a lot she could say to that. Her parents had watched their daughterâs heart break. Parents werenât very forgiving of such things. âMy dad has never been subtle.â
Rafe laughed. âYeah. But he does what a father should. He loves and protects you. My dadâs always been a good role model for me, but so was yours.â
The words hung between them.
âCan I walk you home?â Rafe asked.
She was tempted. Over the past few days sheâd been drawn back into his world, a world so unlike what theyâd expected to have together. How very differently their lives had turned outâas a couple and individually.
Heâd changed, was more self-assured and confident. Heâd handled the situation with Beau without rancor, even though they didnât like each other at all. It took a persuasive man to do that with someone as stubborn as Beau.
âIf you hadnât come along, Rafe,â she said finally,âIâm sure I wouldâve picked a fight with Beau, which wouldnât have accomplished anything. I probably wouldâve threatened him with a lawsuit, too.â
âWhich also wouldnât have accomplished anything, since he hasnât done anything illegal. Yet.â
âYet?â
âLetâs take it a day at a time, Mel. Letâs try to work together as a unit, not let Beau goad us into losing our tempers.â
âI canât even picture you losing your temper anymore.â It was true. The Rafe from years ago, yes. Heâd been passionate and emotional. This Rafe was smooth and controlled.
âIâm not as calm or patient as you might think. Iâve just learned how to channel my energy differently.â He leaned a little closer, his voice softer, quieter, but somehow more intense. âIâm a man with normal needs, Melina. Normal wants. Even I lose patience when Iâm denied for too long. Donât you remember that about me?â
She remembered. Sheâd loved when heâd let loose of his control, making her feel desired and cherished. Heâd had a single-mindedness about him when making love that she hadnât appreciated then, not knowing any different. Now she knew.
However, he was being patient now, just standing and watching her, waiting for her to speak. Instead she went up on tiptoe and kissed him. After the barest surprised pause he kissed her back, feeling familiarand yet new in rediscovery, the taste of him tinder to the dry
