make out a single word on the page. Jessie sat down on the opposite end of the sofa and curled her legs underneath her.
“Mmm…I didn’t even realize the sun had gone down.”
“You must be really focused then. I can turn on a lamp and give you some privacy.”
“No. I’m good.” Brian was hesitant for a moment before asking the question that had been playing around in his mind, “I’ve just got to ask about the guy you’re dating. Who is he?”
Jessie looked confused. “What? Why would you ask that?”
Brian finally looked up from his script. “You’re different. I mean you’re the same, but you’re different. I’m not used to seeing you….like this .”
Jessie moved her head to the side, “‘Like this’? What does that mean?”
“I mean you’re dressing sexier and your hair is different, among other things. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out it has something to do with a guy.”
Jessie wagged her finger at him, “Don’t project on me, Mr. Wright. You’re the one who is seeing someone and keeping secrets.”
Brian didn’t look at all surprised that Jessie knew about Brigitte. He was going to tell her himself, but he just wasn’t quite sure how to do it. He was actually relieved that Téa had told her.
“I’m not keeping secrets. I just hadn’t really had a chance to tell you myself.”
Jessie looked at him skeptically. “You’ve been dating her for the past couple of months. So don’t give me that you didn’t have a chance to tell me line. We talk on the phone almost every other day.”
“Well, Brigitte and I are not exclusive…yet. But, I like her.”
That confession threw Jessie for a loop. Either one of them being in a relationship was definitely going to have an effect on the time they spent together.
“Enough about me. You never answered my question. What’s his name?”
Jessie plastered on a fake smile and hoped that Brian bought it. “No one that I’m ready to discuss yet. Early stages.”
Brian nodded his understanding.
Jessie was always uncomfortable talking about her love life or lack thereof. As a distraction, she reached out and lifted the script from his lap and read it out loud. “The Empress of Zuru. When do you start filming that?”
“In two weeks.”
“Do you need help running lines?”
Brian could use a distraction, too. Anything to keep him from thinking about running his hands up and down her body.
“Yeah…why not. You’re Cecily, my royal wife, whom I’ve been married to for ten years. We’re going through a rough patch. She’s trying to convince me not to give up on our marriage and embarrass the crown. Got it?”
“Got it.”
He pointed out the part where she needed to read, “Just start at the top of the page.” Then, he closed his eyes and rested his head on the back of the sofa.
Cecily: “Ross, ten years. We’ve been together ten years. Do you really want to throw it all away?”
Ross: “Cecily…I want a divorce. Our marriage hasn’t worked for years. I want to be happy. I want you to be happy, too.”
The script called for Cecily to try and seduce Ross but for Ross to reject her. “Am I supposed to follow this script to the letter?”
Brian was so focused on his lines that he really hadn’t put much thought into her question. He shrugged his shoulders. “Do whatever makes you comfortable, I just need to make sure I’ve got these lines right.”
Jessie was nervous but thought she’d go for it. He’d said him and Brigitte weren’t exclusive yet. “Okay…Let’s start over.”
Cecily: “Ross, ten years. We’ve been together ten years. Do you really want to throw it all away?”
Ross: “Cecily…I want a divorce. Our marriage hasn’t worked for years. I want to be happy. I want you to be happy, too.”
Jessie moved her legs from beneath her. Brian’s eyes were still closed, so he had
