house.
Tori remembered the picnic tomorrow. âWait. I almost forgot. Youâre invited to a picnic at the Hopping H tomorrow.â
âWill CJ be there?â The sad dark eyes were suddenly brighter.
âYeah. But Iâm sure heâll understand, if youâd ratherââ
Jerilyn put up a hand. âPlease. I want to go. My bikeâs at your house. Can you pick me up?â
Tori named a time and Jerilyn said she would be ready.
As Tori and her dad got back in the rental, she offered, âHungry?â
Her dad shook his head. âButch gave me a sandwich. And I need to get to Bozeman. Thereâs a flight to Denver at ten to nine.â
They drove back to Toriâs house.
âThatâs one shiny SUV,â her dad said when he pulled to a stop behind the expensive vehicle. âAnd thereâs a man on your porch.â
Tori glanced over and saw Connor sitting on her top step, wearing pricey jeans, expensive boots and a dark-colored knit shirt. The sight of him caused her heart to do a happy somersault inside her chest. Which was ridiculous. And physically impossible. âItâs Connor. Heâsâ¦a friend,â she said, sounding absurdly breathless. Connor rose and came down the steps. She added, âIâll introduce you to him, Dad.â
Connor was already at her side door. She rolled her window down. He was smiling. But his eyes were cool. Maybe he wasnât all that happy about watching her drive up with a strange man.
âHey,â he said. âI got worried about you.â
âConnor, this is my father, Dr. Sherwood Jones.â
Suddenly, his dark eyes had warmth in them again. âDr. Jones. Hello.â
Her dad stuck his arm across the seat. âGood to meet you, Connor.â Connor put out his hand, too. Tori leaned out of the way so they could shake.
Then Sherwood gunned the engine. âI hate to run off. But I have to get a move on or Iâll miss that last flight. And while your stepmother is a very understanding woman, she insists I save Sundays for her and the boys.â
Tori leaned across the console and kissed his cheek. âThanks, Dad.â
âAnytime.â
âKiss Lucille and hug my brothers for me.â
âWill do.â
Connor opened her door for her and she got out. With a final wave, Toriâs dad drove off.
She felt Connorâs hand settle at her waist. A little thrill went through her at the contact. She chided him, âI said I would call.â
âI should be more patient, I know.â
âYes, you should. Especially considering that weâve only had one date.â
âTwo, if you count tomorrow.â
She laughed. âItâs not tomorrow yet.â And then she confessed, âIâm glad youâre here.â
âMe, too.â He pulled her closer to his side. âWhat was that all about?â
She looked up into those beautiful eyes of his and wanted to trust himâeven if he was a shark. âIâm starving.â
âAre you going to tell me what happened today?â
âProbably. But right now, I want to eat.â
âYou want to go out?â
âYou know, youâre sneaking in a third date on me and we havenât even gotten through the second one yet.â
âItâs true. Thatâs exactly what Iâm doing. We could go toââ
She didnât let him finish. âNo. Iâve got some stuffed shells in the fridge. And Iâll make a salad. You want pasta?â
âI ate with CJ. But if you twisted my arm, Iâd have a little something.â
âJerilyn will be coming with us tomorrow.â
âTerrific. I wasnât looking forward to telling CJ otherwise.â
They went up the walk together, circling Jerilynâs bike when they got to it. Tori made a mental note to take it up to the porch before she went to bed.
Inside, Connor pushed the front door shut behind them and
