rolled over on Frannieâs bed and pulled a pillow close to my chest. âDo you see anything else in that crystal ball of yours?â
âI see another double date,â she said. âFor me and Jeffrey, and you and your new boyfriend.â
âRight. Because there are so many gay boys at Boring Brook to choose from,â I said.
âIt doesnât have to be someone from school. It could be . . . Goatee Guy. You could get off your butt and ask him out once and for all.â
âWell,â I said, âFor one thing, he doesnât work at the mall anymore. And for another thing, we donât even know his real name.â Goatee Guy was the probably gay, definitely cute former assistant manager at Made in the Shades, where in the past year Iâd bought not one but three pairs of sunglasses I didnât need.
âWhat happened to him?â Frannie asked.
âThatâs the point,â I said. âYouâll have to check the crystal ball again.â
âWell, then, what about . . .â She trailed off.
I sat up on the bed and looked straight at her. âYes? Who?â
âWell . . .â
âExactly. So can we go online now, please? I already know what screen name you should use.â
âWhat is it?â
âTempeh Burger.â
âMmmm,â she said. âVery sexy.â
I got up and swiveled her chair so she was facing the computer. âIt shows him you have a sense of humor. And heâll know itâs you right away.â
âWell, then why donât I just say Frannie?â
âBecause then everyone will know itâs you,â I said.
âOh yeah.â She typed in TEMPEHBURGER and went in. Almost right away, she pulled her hands back from the keyboard. âThere he is,â she said. I looked down and saw that the first lines of chat had come in, including one from Jeffrey.
<>
Frannie still looked like she had been caught at something. âUh, you know he canât see you, right?â I asked her.
Her response was a glare in my direction. âJust . . . tell me what to say.â She put her hands tentatively back on the keys while another line scrolled by.
<>
Astrid. Of course.
âEe-ew,â Frannie said. Then she stood up. âThis is too much for me to handle. You go.â
I could have told Frannie that no, in fact, this wasnât too much for her to handle and that she owed it to herself to keep going. But the alternate response meant I got to do a little of the driving. And I like to drive.
âWhat do you want me to say?â I asked, sitting in her place.
âTell him I said hi. And . . . I had a good time at lunch. And I didnât know if maybe . . . um . . . I donât know. Maybe . . .â Her face brightened. âShould I ask him about going out again?â
âI have a better idea,â I said, and typed in a private message to Jeffo.
<>
âThatâs good too,â she said, and I hit send. He came back a second later.
<>
âHe knows itâs me!â Frannie sounded glad and surprised. âGood name choice.â
âTold you so,â I said.
<>
<>
In the main chat room, Astrid wasnât giving up so easily.
<>
Frannie saw it too. âGo back to Germany!â she yelled at the screen.
<>
âAuuugh,â Frannie groaned. âHeâs talking to her too.â
<>
<>
âGenius!â Frannie said. She grabbed my shoulders and started rubbing them.
âSo where do you want to tell him
