LUKE: Complete Series
in.”
I grabbed her arm to stop her before she could get past me. “Why don’t you have a seat and I’ll let him know you’re here?”
She smirked at me as she wrenched her arm free. “As you wish.”
“Would you like a diet soda while you wait?” I asked.
    “No, thank you.”
I quickly made my way to Luke’s door and knocked softly. I didn’t want to give Janice the impression she was making me nervous. The door swung open on its own and I entered, quickly shutting the door behind me.
“Good morning, beautiful,” Luke said, a smile stretching across his gorgeous face as he stood from his chair and came to me.
As soon as he put his hands on my face I could feel myself fading into him. His scent was intoxicating, like sunshine and soap. His lips covered mine as his tongue slid into my mouth, searching and teasing me. An involuntary whimper resounded in my throat and he responded by sliding his arm around my waist and pulling me closer. He finally pulled away and rested his forehead against mine.
    “Good morning,” I whispered.
He kissed the tip of my nose and released me. “I need you to book a reservation at Noku this afternoon. I’m meeting with a new client today. Justine at Brigham Solutions.”
“Consider it done.” I couldn’t help but stare at his butt as he made his way back to his desk chair. “You have a visitor.”
He took a seat and leaned back. “Who is it?”
    “Janice.”
He scrunched his eyebrows together as he contemplated this news. “Why is she here?”
“To see you. That’s all she said.”
“Tell her I’m on a conference call. I’m really not in the mood to see Janice right now.”
“She came all the way here from West Lake.”
A flash of anger slid over his face and I took that as my cue to let it go. I left his office and closed the door softly behind me.
“He’s on a conference call. He wants you to call him later to schedule a meeting.”
I couldn’t decide if Janice looked more hurt, angry, or surprised. She stood slowly from the chair and nodded at me then made her way to the elevator without saying a word. I took a seat at my desk, formerly Janice’s desk, as she pushed the call button. After a long moment of silence, the elevator doors slid open.
She placed her hand on the door to hold them open and turned to me. “You’re only sitting there because of me. Don’t forget that.”
She disappeared inside the elevator and my hands shook as I pulled up the phone number for Noku Japanese restaurant on my computer. Janice had thrown me off my plan to tell Luke, but I would tell him later. I would invite him to my apartment tonight.
I was about to dial Noku when Luke’s face flashed on my computer screen. “Brina, come in here.”
    “Coming.”
I closed the door behind me as I entered his office and he pointed at the chair in front of his desk. I took a seat feeling as if I was about to be chastised by the principal for cutting class.
“What’s up?” I asked, trying my hardest to sound cheery.
“I have something to ask you and I want you to give me an honest answer.”
Oh, shit. This was it. He was finally going to confront me about working for NeoSys.
    “Of course.”
“Brina.” He paused for a moment as his gaze slid down my body then back up to my face. “Will you attend a birthday party with me this Saturday? You don’t have to come if you don’t want to, but I’d really like to have you there with me.”
I tried not to let out the breath I’d been holding all at once. “Of course, I’ll go to a birthday party with you. Whose birthday?”
“Mine. Jerry Wilshire, one of my old partners, and his wife are throwing it for me at the Four Seasons . It’s going to be a big thing that I really don’t even want to go to, but Jerry’s the reason I am where I am today, so I couldn’t say no.”
    “It’s your birthday on Saturday?”
I knew his birthday was not on Saturday, but I had to at least pretend I didn’t
