holding tightly to one of Hettyâs hands.
Dropping all pretense of politeness, Avery snapped, âI mean your heavy hand with whatever you put in my wine last nightâand your lovely nieceâs non appearance. I do believe that my message included all the ladies.â
âTess isnât feeling well. She canât leave her bed,â Hetty said.
âIs that so?â
âYes, why would we lie?â Meg demanded gamely.
âWhy indeed,â Avery said dryly. Ignoring them for the moment, he crossed to the bell rope that hung against the wall and rang for a servant. Almost immediately Lowell answered the summons.
Bluntly Avery asked his butler, âHave you carried out my requests?â
A not-very-nice smile creased Lowellâs dour features. âYes, sir. I have.â He glanced at the two women. âThey ainât nobody in them rooms. Theyâre empty. The chit ainât nowhere in the house or stables. Sheâs gone.â
âAh, and have you taken care of everything else?â
Lowell nodded curtly. âExcept for me and Coleman, all the servants have packed and left for the unexpected holiday you so kindly granted them.â
A smile that sent chills down the backs of the two women crossed Averyâs face. âThank you, Lowell. That will be all.â
Avery waited until the door had closed behind his henchman before he turned to the ladies. âAnd now,â he said coldly, âsuppose you tell me precisely what happened last night and where Tess is hidden.â
Hetty met his gaze squarely. Lifting her chin, she said, âShe is gone to London. To her uncles.â
âI see. A rather sudden trip on her part, wasnât it?â
âWell, what did you expect?â Meg asked rashly. âYou planned to dishonor her and force her to marry you! But thank the Lord, sheâs managed to escape you!â
âOh, I doubt that,â Avery said silkily. âWhat do you think the reactions of Baron Rockwell and his esteemed brother will be when I tell them that Tess and I have already been intimate? That this silly flight of hers is nothing more than a loversâ quarrel, hmm?â
âThatâs a black-hearted lie!â Hetty burst out indignantly. âAlexander would never believe you!â
âAh, but I wonder if the rest of society would be so understanding....â
In her great agitation, Hetty rose to her feet. Bosom heaving, she spat, âAlexander would never allow you to say such things. Youâd find yourself on the dueling field if you dared to spread such lies!â
Avery looked bored. âBut then, of course, the reason for the duel would have to be explained, wouldnât it?â
Hettyâs defiance crumpled and she sat back down, her face drawn. âYou wouldnât,â she said shakily. âYou wouldnât dare.â
âWouldnât I?â Avery replied almost cheerfully. âOh, but I would indeed. I think that you ladies had better resign yourselves to the fact that I intendââhis eyes glitteredââfor Tess to become my wife, one way or the other....â He smiled at their defeated faces. âI will leave early tomorrow to call upon the baron and his brother. While Iâm gone, Iâm afraid you ladies will have to make do with the services of Coleman and Lowell.â His voice grew hard. âYou will, of course, be locked in your rooms, and I wouldnât count on anyone releasing youâLowell and Coleman are quite capable of dealing with any intruders. You may wish me a speedy trip.â
Hettyâs violet eyes almost purple with rage, she rose to her feet and said fiercely, âWhat I wish, sir, is for you to go to the very devil!â
Â
Unaware of the events taking place at Mandeville Manor, Tess had taken stock of her present situation and found it not exactly pleasant. Aside from the bodily discomfortsâand there were many
