discuss your options,” Scarlet suggested.
“He said if it becomes cancerous, then we’d have to operate,” my mom said calmly. “Until then, we should leave it alone.”
My dad looked uncomfortable. “But you’re on medication for this. I don’t want you to take it for the rest of your life. It’s not good for your body.”
“Well, I’m not going to stop,” she said immediately.
My dad rubbed his thumb over her knuckles. “I think we should see another specialist and ask for all the information.”
“Like what?” I asked.
“What the mortality rate of the surgery is, what are the side effects, what other problems will this tumor cause long term, everything,” my dad said.
“But we already discussed all of that,” my mom said.
“I want to hear it myself,” my dad said firmly. “You weren’t in the right mind last time you went. We need to do this as a family.”
I could tell my mom was scared. She looked at the table, unable to meet our gaze.
My dad stared at her for a while before he kissed her forehead. “Diane, it will be alright.”
“I don’t want to die…”
“You aren’t.” My dad held her close. “We just have to be cautious about this.”
“But…I just want to forget about it.” Her eyes watered. “Let’s just forget about it.”
“I can’t,” my dad said gently. “I need to take care of you.”
I hated seeing my mom cry. She was so scared.
“It’ll be alright,” my dad said. “We just have to be cautious and proactive about it. Being in ignorance is never a good thing. We’re going back to the doctor, and together, we will see this through. You aren’t alone, dear.”
She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Finally, she nodded. “I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?” my dad asked.
“For putting you through this.”
He grabbed her face and forced her to look at him. “Don’t ever say that again.”
She held his gaze before she finally looked away. “Okay.”
We sat quietly at the table, falling into comfortable silence. I felt bad for my dad. I knew he was scared even though he didn’t show it. I grabbed Scarlet’s hand under the table and squeezed it. You never knew how long you had on this earth. Anything could happen in a blink of an eye. Feeling Scarlet’s hand in mine calmed me down. I could deal with anything happening to me, but I couldn’t stand it if something happened to her. Because she was everything to me.
When we got home, I grabbed a blanket and a few candles and placed them on the beach. It was dark so it was difficult to see the ocean, but the waves were loud and clear. I lit the candles to set the mood then retrieved my wife.
I walked into the house and saw her sitting on the couch. Her knees were pulled to her chest and she was staring at the wall, probably thinking about my mom. Wordlessly, I kneeled before her and pulled her legs down. My hands gripped her hips and pulled her to me.
I rubbed my nose against hers then stared at her lips. Her breathing increased, and I knew the spark was still between us. We were just as hot for each other as we were when we first got together. She drove me wild, igniting every nerve in my body.
I gently pressed my lips against hers and held it. Her lips were wet and soft. My hand cupped her face and I suddenly felt scared. I loved her so much and I would die if something happened to her. I knew I shouldn’t think this way. The travesties of life were unpredictable and unstoppable, but I wanted to hold onto this moment forever. I wish I could be immortal just so I could always be with her. That’s how much I loved her. No one else ever made me feel that way.
Her lips responded to mine and she breathed hard, feeling the same emotion I felt. Her hands dug into my hair and gripped me tightly. Our kisses grew passionate and hot. I was aroused but not in the way I usually was. I wanted to kiss her forever. Kissing used to be boring to me, but I loved doing it with her. She was exceptionally
