business.â
âIf people only talked about what was their business, they wouldnât get very far. You donât strike me as a man-hater, Hester.â
She lifted a brow. When pushed, she could play the game by someone elseâs rules. And she could play it well. âI went through a period of time when I despised men on principle. Actually, it was a very rewarding time of my life. Then, gradually, I came to the opinion that some members of your species werenât lower forms of life.â
âSounds promising.â
She smiled again, because he made it easy. âThe point is, I donât blame all men for the faults of one.â
âYouâre just cautious.â
âIf you like.â
âThe one thing Iâm sure I like is your eyes. No, donât look away.â Patiently, he turned her face back to his. âTheyâre fabulousâtake it from an artistâs standpoint.â
She had to stop being so jumpy, Hester ordered herself. With an effort, she remained still. âDoes that mean theyâre going to appear in an upcoming issue?â
âThey just might.â He smiled, appreciating the thought and the fact that though tense, she was able to hold her own. âPoor old Zark deserves to meet someone who understands him. These eyes would.â
âIâll take that as a compliment.â And run. âThe boys will be back in a minute.â
âWeâve got some time yet. Hester, do you ever have fun?â
âWhat a stupid question. Of course I do.â
âNot as Radâs mother, but as Hester.â He ran a hand through her hair, captivated.
âI
am
Radâs mother.â Though she managed to rise, he stood with her.
âYouâre also a woman. A gorgeous one.â He saw the look in her eyes and ran his thumb along her jawline. âTake my word for it. Iâm an honest man. Youâre one gorgeous bundle of nerves.â
âThatâs silly. I donât have anything to be nervous about.â Other than the fact that he was touching her, and his voice was quiet, and the apartment was empty.
âIâll take the shaft out of my heart later,â he murmured. He bent to kiss her, then had to catch her when she nearly stumbled over the newspapers. âTake it easy. Iâm not going to bite you. This time.â
âI have to go.â She was as close to panic as she ever allowed herself to come. âI have a dozen things to do.â
âIn a minute.â He framed her face. She was trembling, he realized. It didnât surprise him. What did was that he wasnât steady himself. âWhat we have here, Mrs. Wallace, is called attraction, chemistry, lust. It doesnât really matter what label you put on it.â
âMaybe not to you.â
âThen weâll let you pick the label later.â He stroked his thumbs over her cheekbones, gently, soothingly. âI already told you Iâm not a maniac. Iâll have to remember to get those references.â
âMitch, I told you I appreciate what youâre doing for Rad, but I wish youâdââ
âHere and now doesnât concern Rad. This is you and me, Hester. When was the last time you let yourself be alone with a man who wanted you?â He casually brushed his thumb over her lips. Her eyes went to smoke. âWhen was the last time you let anyone do this?â
His mouth covered hers quickly, with a force that came as a shock. She hadnât been prepared for violence. His hands had been so gentle, his voice so soothing. She hadnât expected this edgy passion. But God, how sheâd wanted it. With the same reckless need, she threw her arms around his neck and answered demand for demand.
âToo long,â Mitch managed breathlessly when he tore his mouth from hers. âThank God.â Before she could utter more than a moan, he took her mouth again.
He hadnât been sure what
