leads her to the room the woman emerged from. They pass the stairs and see zombies ascending. The stairs creak as they climb slowly, moaning sadly. The woman’s surprisingly melodic voice chants a soothing song. Dan ushers his new companion into the room and closes the door.
The master bedroom has a king sized bed in the middle of it. The other furniture is being pushed against the entrance. A large dresser is moved first, then Dan hefts the nightstand from the right side of the bed and props it next to the relocated wardrobe. Last, he slides a heavy hope chest from the foot of the bed across the carpeting.
Creaks and moans get louder and louder. The barely audible lullaby gets overpowered by the creepy sounds of horror. Dan cracks the double barrel shotgun open and finds both shells have been spent. I know she only fired once, Dan wonders. This raises a question Dan has to ask the girl, but he isn’t sure he has the tact for it. He debates exactly how to broach the query. It may be too hard for the girl to answer.
“ Where’s your dad?” He blurts.
“ Mommy shot him.” She tells him what he had figured. “He came home from work with his arm wrapped up… Then he turned into one of those people.”
Dan listens to her story as he searches the room’s closet for more shells. He reaches up to a high shelf and blindly feels around in case they are hidden.
“ Daddy works at the hospital. They needed him to go in this morning. He came home feeling sick.”
Dan opens the drawer of the nightstand he had left by the bed. He wants the girl to keep talking, he looks at her and nods that he is listening. What she is saying doesn’t quite add up yet. He doesn’t think Damien was bitten.
“ Daddy took a nap and woke up as one of them.”
Dan realizes he must check the furniture he had moved against the door. He starts with the hope chest.
“ Mommy was upset because Dammie died last night.”
Dan is moving the hope chest full of blankets away so he can reach the other nightstand. He pauses from what she has just told him.
“ He died of stids, then he got better.”
SIDS. Dan wouldn’t correct her. Sudden infant death syndrome is every parent’s nightmare. Dan had been reading up on precautions to prevent it. Take all the toys and blankets out of the crib, and it can still rob you of your child. The girl is crying now.
Dan gives up his search of the nightstand and goes to her. She buries her head into his shoulder. Her body shakes from her deep sobs. The girl doesn’t hold back. She lets it all out.
From the hall they hear screaming. Both are startled by the terrifying shriek. Dan wonders if they had gotten into the nursery, or if the woman had exited. It doesn’t matter, they have her. The girl also starts to scream.
The newly orphaned young girl yells out for her mom. Dan can picture the grotesque faces of the dead turning their lackadaisical attention towards the room they now hide in. He has no choice but to let her wail as he leaves her side. He needs to check the dresser for ammunition. He tears through the drawers and only finds clothes.
The child is lying on the bed, crying inconsolably. The soldier looks under it. No shells. Not even a dust bunny. He thinks to ask the girl where they might be, but she is far too distraught at the moment. He scans the room for another possible hiding place, there is no other furniture. He sees two windows and another door next to the closet. Probably a bathroom, Dan reasons. Would they store the ammo in there? Probably not, however I need to be sure.
The door to the alleged bathroom is lightweight and flimsy. As his hand reaches for the brass knob a crash on the other side of it halts him. Placing his ear to the cheap wood he can hear shuffling.
“ Connects to the hall.” Dan thinks aloud. “It connects, and they are now in there.” His thoughts go silent as he listens to the occupants of the bathroom. The only thing between them is this thin, fragile door.
