really was.
“I understand that you want to use your own vows, is that correct?” he asked.
Did I miss Nate telling me this? My gaze scanned the room, never settling as I tried to remember. In my panic, I felt Nate squeeze me hand. With an effort, I tried to calm myself to listen.
“I thought we could just speak from the heart,” he said timidly.
Ironically, considering I was a lawyer, I wasn’t usually good at talking in front of people—preferring to have what I was going to say planned out—but I couldn’t deny the excitement in Nate’s eyes. He was the only one I’d do this for. “Okay.”
The smile that spread across his face was infectious and he turned us to the chaplain. “We’re ready.”
Chaplain Hayes nodded. “Dear friends and family, we are gathered here today in the sight of God to witness the joining of Nate and Danielle, as husband and wife. Before we do the exchanging of rings, they have something they’d like to say to each other. Nate, why don’t you go first?”
Nate turned to face me and, taking both my hands in his, he gazed into my eyes and cleared his throat before beginning. “Danielle, since the moment we met, you’ve been my light in the darkness. Your smile lifts my spirits, and your love makes me feel like the luckiest man in the world. There are so many things I want to promise you, but I also know the realities of the path I’ve chosen and I can’t tell you how happy it makes me that you’re willing to share this life with me. I can’t promise to be with you every moment of everyday, but know that when I am with you, I’ll make the most of every second. I can promise you that my love for you will never die and that you will always hold my heart, and know that even when I’m away, you will be the first thing I think of in the morning and the last thing I think of as I fall asleep to dream about our time together. You are my heart, my soul, and every breath I take. I love you, Danielle Renton, and I am so happy that you’ll be my wife.”
The words made my heart feel so full. My vision blurred as tears of absolute bliss filled my eyes. When one of them slipped down my cheek, Nate reached up and used his thumb to brush it away. “Don’t cry,” he whispered.
“That was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.”
“Danielle, are you ready?” Chaplain Hayes asked.
Even though I felt my hands begin to shake, I took a moment and collected my thoughts before beginning. “Nate, every moment I’ve spent with you over the last nine years has been filled with the most amazing memories, and I can’t wait to make a million more. Your love for me shines through in everything you do, and I’m so grateful you’ve chosen to share that love with me. My heart beats for you and you alone. I know there will be hard times, times when you’re away and I wonder how I’m going to do it, but I promise to always let my love for you help me through those times—knowing that while I’m here missing you, you’re somewhere missing me. I promise to be whatever you need me to be, even if it’s a shoulder to cry on. I know your job isn’t easy and I want to be your rock. I will always be here to shower you with my love. You are truly my one and only and I can’t live without you. I love you, Nate Lewis, and I’m even happier to become your wife.”
It was Nate’s turn to be caught in the moment. I could see the tears shimmering at the edges of his eyes. After a moment, we turned back to the chaplain. “Nate and Danielle, thank you for showing your love for one another.” He turned to Nate. “Nate, do you take Danielle Renton to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, so long as you both shall live?”
“I do.”
Chaplain Hayes then turned to me. “Danielle, do you take Nate Lewis to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, so long as you both shall live?”
“I do.”
