differently.â
âWell,â I say, âI was with Toni, and I know Miss Temple and Miss Plummer were together, so I suppose that left Mrs Harvey and Jenny Freeborn. She was the other monitor.â
âAnd the men?â
âMr Jasmyne was with Mr Tremblings, I think.â
âAnd the other two monitors â this was Jamie Turner and â¦?â
âDavid Lau.â
âThey were together?â
âI think so. But I couldnât swear to it because they were right at the other end of the tents.â
âSo, the menâs tents were all at one end?â
âUp where the boys were.â
âAnd the women down the girlsâ end?â
âYes.â
âAnd that left one person over.â
âHow do you mean, Mr Jackson?â
âWell, if what youâve said so far is right, we have one person left who apparently had a tent to himself â Mr Prescott. How did that come about?â
âI donât know, Mr Jackson.â
âWell, would you have expected it? I mean, Mr Prescottâs very popular, isnât he? With students, with other teachers?â
âYes.â
âSo, wouldnât you expect heâd be the first person someone would want to tent with â another teacher, one of the monitors perhaps?â
âWell, if they had a choice, the monitors wouldnât want to sleep with a teacher.â
There is a silence when I say this. I look up at the picture of the Queen on the wall above Mr Jacksonâs head to stop myself from going red.
âTenting,â Mr Jackson says finally. âWeâre discussing tenting for the moment, Miss Vassilopoulos.â
âYes, Mr Jackson. But Iâm sure Mr Jasmyne and Mr Tremblings would have wanted to be together.â
âWhy?â Mr Kovacs says, and this is the first question heâs asked so far. I thought he must have gone to sleep or been resting his eyes till Toniâs legs appeared through the door.
âBecause theyâre both â¦â
âBoth what?â Mr Kovacs says.
âBoth â¦â I say, and I donât want to make another mistake and say something stupid, and how can you say nerds about two teachers to the Principal and the Chairman of the School Board? But Iâve got so flustered, nerd is the only word I can think of, and they wouldnât understand geek or dweeb, and whatâs a proper English synonym for nerd anyway?
And by this time, Mr Kovacs has got a funny look on his face and is leaning back in his chair and looking at Mr Jackson, not me at all, and his expression is saying, âWell, good God, Principal, what have we got on our hands here?â, or something.
âTheyâre both what, Laura?â Mr Murchison asks, in his usual helpful voice. âCompatible? Both interested in the same things?â
âYes. Thatâs what I mean.â
âWhat sorts of things?â
âWell, like plants and animals, and that. And computing -theyâre always talking about this exciting new software program or something.â
âI see,â Mr Murchison says, and Mr Kovacs has gone back to fiddling with his papers again, and saving his eyes up for Toni.
âAnd so,â Mr Murchison says, âwith common interests like that, theyâd naturally gravitate together, just as the two male monitors would?â
âYes.â
âAnd I suppose Mr Prescott â being the easy-going fellow he is â would probably say âGo ahead, Iâm fine by myselfâ?â
âYes, Mr Murchison,â I say, and Iâm just glad thereâs someone there with a few brains who can work things out.
âThank you, Mr Murchison,â Mr Jackson says, but I can tell he doesnât mean it. âThatâs been very helpful. And now, Miss Vassilopoulos, just one more thing about this Cobar stop-over.â
âYes, Mr Jackson?â I say, but Iâm wondering to myself if
