âAnderson, Iâve been crushing on you for years. Havenât you ever noticed?â
âOh.â She was taken aback.
Tommy?
Tommy the joker, who never took her seriously but who was always there, always listening, always commiserating over everything that ever happened to her?
Hello?
âYears,â he repeated, as if trying to penetrate her astonishment. âSince we were babies, practically.â
âOh.â
She gave him a shy smile. âHi.â It wasnât poetry, but it was all she could think to say. Somehow, though, it was all she needed to say.
He smiled back. âHi.â Gave her hand another wag. âNot so bad?â
âNot so bad,â she agreed. âBut weâre still babies.â âNot so much.â He pecked her cheek.
âMew.â
A cat jumped up onto Amandaâs lap. Startled, she jumped and then settled as the cat began to purr and curled up as though to go to sleep.
âWell, where did you come from?â she asked the bedraggled-looking feline. âAre you Roseâs cat?â
âHer name is Astarte. She is Nicoleâs. She came to Nicole a few nights before she was kidnapped. She has joined us in the search,â Pablo told her.
Amanda felt her stomach twist into a tight knot. A few nights before she was kidnapped â¦
Did this cat come to her when Holly drowned Hecate?
she wondered. A chill rippled up her spine.
Philippe looked over at Amanda and Tommy. He looked envious. âThey found each other,â he murmured.
âWell, they didnât have far to look,â Sasha said dryly. She looked expectantly at Holly.
Holly cleared her throat. âAs you know, there was a battle, and I ⦠I made contact with a veiled woman. She undid it somehow.â
âWhat was her price?â Sasha asked. As Holly flushed, she pressed; âIt was worse than the cat, wasnât it?â
Holly narrowed her eyes. âThatâs my business.â
âNo, itâs not, not when youâre part of a coven. We all have to agree on things. Itâs the way of the Mother Coven.â
Jerâs mother was putting Holly on the defensive, and she didnât like it. Holly threw back her head and shot back, âAnd thatâs why the Mother Coven is so weak, Sasha. Look at us. They canât even protect us, while the Supreme Coven kidnaps some of us and kills others. Theyâre lame.â
Sasha blinked. âI canât believe you can say that, whenââ
âAlors,â
Philippe said, raising his hands. He turned his attention to Holly. âI beg your pardon, but we must move to action, not discuss philosophy.â
âYouâre right,â she said tersely. âWhatâs done is done. What I did or said â¦â She exhaled. âIâm not certainwhat I agreed to, in all honesty. But it saved us.â
âSometimes thatâs not the right thing to do,â Sasha insisted.
âWell, when you get down off your high horse, let me know.â Holly turned on her heel.
âHolly,â Philippe called, following her as she stomped into the kitchen. She looked around, found Roseâs electric kettle, and lifted it to see if there was water in it. Satisfied that it had recently been filled, she plugged it in and rummaged through the scattering of tea things on a silver tray for a tea bag.
âYouâre the one Nicole called,â Philippe said, leaning against the white-tiled counter. âIt was then that James and Eli were alerted to our location. Then that José LuÃs was killed.â
She hunched her shoulders as she selected a Prince of Wales tea bag and smoothed the string away from the little pouch of fragrant tea. âAre you trying to guilt-trip me into saving her? Because you donât need to. I said Iâd do it and I will.â
âIâm only saying that I care about her. We care about her,â he amended.
âNo, you
