of the men get jobs in store security.â
âAnd bust teeny-bopper shoplifters all day.â
Her face flushed with anger. âYou know, youâre full of it. Why am I wasting my time with a man whoâs such a goddamn crybaby? You feel sorry for yourself, Lark. You wallow in self-pity, and Iâm tired of it.â
âThen leave,â he said softly as he stared into his beer.
âItâs not that simple. Iâve given you years of my life.â
âMonths would be closer to the truth. Christ, youâre melodramatic tonight.â
âYou bring out the bitch in me.â
âNo wonder your husband left you.â
She stared at him with wide eyes. âAt least he didnât blow his head off.â
He moved without thought. His body catapulted across the room as his hands automatically balled into fists. His hand lashed out to be deflected at the last possible moment by a massive surge of will. âI almost lost control.â
âDo you want to hit me?â
He took two backward steps. âI almost did.â
âYou know, Lark, one of these days you arenât going to stop.â
He slumped down on the divan. âYou know all the wrong buttons to press.â
âYouâre not a bad button-presser yourself.â She turned and ran from the trailer.
He heard her car-starter engine whine and whine again. Her engine started, coughed, and died. He went to the doorway. âYouâve flooded it.â
âScrew you!â She jammed her foot down on the accelerator.
âWait.â
âUp yours.â The engine caught and she threw the car in gear.
Lark ran into the carâs path and stood before it with his hands stretched toward its nose. âI want you to hear something.â
âIâm tired of insults.â She jammed on the brakes only feet from him. âOut of the way.â
He walked over to the driverâs door, opened it, and gently put a hand on her shoulder. âThereâs something you should know. It might explain something about me. Come with me.â
âYou take me anywhere, Lark, and I warn you, Iâll scream the whole bloody way. When you stop for a traffic light, Iâll jump out and yell rape.â
âGonna call the cops?â He tried to smile.
âYou know it. You almost hit me.â
âCome.â His voice was cold and authoritative. She looked at him a moment and then slowly climbed from her car and followed him to the pickup.
âIâm not in the mood for a beer in one of your dives.â
âThis is something else.â
Lark parked in front of a fire hydrant at police headquarters and firmly took her elbow and led her into the building.
Faby broke from his grip and approached the amused desk sergeant. âThis man has me prisoner.â
âSo, what else is new?â the sergeant asked.
âI demand a cop.â
Lt. Horn came out of the watch commanderâs office and looked at Faby with disinterest. âWhatâs coming down, Lark?â
âI picked her up for soliciting.â
Horn looked displeased. âBook her,â he said as he returned to his office.
âYou want me to start paper going?â the sergeant asked.
âGot to interview her first,â Lark said as he led her to the elevator.
âYou know, Lark,â Faby said in a loud voice as the elevator doors began to shut, âyouâre going to have one hell of a time explaining this to those guys at our engagement party.â
âLots of cops fall for perps.â
The elevator rocked to a stop and the doors opened. âMy office is third on the left.â
She stalked ahead of him. âI donât know what Iâm doing here or what kind of games you have in mind. Maybe handcuffs in the back room?â
âFunny.â He followed her into the office and motioned to the desk chair. He took out the cassette player and placed the earphone in her ear.
