downright tragic. Every step the mermaid took on land was agony, as if her feet were being cut by knives; and in the end, the poor girl failed to make the prince love her, and was faced with the choice to either murder him on his wedding night or dissolve into sea foam, soulless and dead.
Love and death. Death and love and transformation. Mira read for hours, transfixed.
It was one minute after midnight when the door clicked open. Mira heard someone moving around the suite with an absolute lack of stealth, and then a muttered:
    â€œAsshole. Where are you?”
So not housekeeping. And not Felix.
    It was Blue.
Mira sighed and climbed off the bed to confront him. They nearly collided in the doorway.
â€œStupid girl,” Blue said, his lip curling.
    â€œMiss me?” she said.
He made no attempt to move away from her. He stood so close she could feel the heat radiating off his body. He’d changed his clothes since this morning and was wearing a dusky purple shirt with an anatomically correct heart on the chest.
â€œAt least you’re not naked,” he said.
â€œBecause if I was, you’d pass out from the glory of it.”
â€œNo,” he said. “That is not why. Where’s Felix? He chewed me out on the phone over you. He must like you—for all the wrong reasons.”
Mira rolled her eyes. “ Maybe he doesn’t approve of your bad behavior. You know—breaking into my room, assaulting me, kidnapping me? I suppose that didn’t occur to you.”
â€œI know my brother better than you do. Bad behavior is his specialty.”
Mira waited a moment, her spine rigid, staring at him while he stared back. Finally, she eased up on the teeth she’d been clenching and said, “Well, he’s not here. Good-bye.”
But Blue didn’t move from his spot. He braced his hands on either side of the doorway, the muscles in his arms tensing. “So you fall for the same shit every girl falls for? You think you’ll be the special one—the girl who lasts? That the rules don’t apply to you?”
    â€œWhat rules?”
â€œAll you need to know is to stay away from him,” he said, leaning forward aggressively. “That’s your rule. Stay. Away.”
Mira jerked back to avoid him—then was annoyed that she’d yielded. As soon as she moved, Blue pushed into the bedroom, eyes flicking to the bed.
â€œReading fairy tales, how sweet. Is Felix your Prince Charming? Did he bring you flowers yet?”
â€œI don’t see why you care. Can’t you find someone else in this city to harass?”
â€œYou’re not my victim, Mira. If you were, you would know it.” Blue sat down on the bed, one leg of his ragged jeans pulled onto the coverlet. “ ‘Cinderella,’ ” he murmured. “Do you like the part where the shoe fills up with the stepsister’s blood? The prince thinks he’s found his mysterious girl from the ball, and then a little bird tells him to check out the trail of blood; he’s got an imposter on the back of his horse. It’s pretty twisted.”
    â€œJust like you,” she said.
â€œThat’s right,” he said, his eyes meeting hers, something severe flickering in their depths. “Just like me. Just like my brother.”
The way he said it made her shiver. She didn’t want to be alone with him anymore. “I think you should go.”
â€œOh, do you now? Too bad. I need to talk to Felix. And unlike you, I actually live here.” Blue resumed flipping through the book, ignoring her. Then he ate the rest of her cookie.
Irritated, Mira retreated to the living room and put on the TV. She got about two minutes of peace before Blue threw himself down next to her.
â€œSo what kind of lines has he been feeding you? I’m curious.”
â€œHe’s not hitting on me,” Mira said through gritted teeth. “He’s helping me find my
