downright tragic. Every step the mermaid took on land was agony, as if her feet were being cut by knives; and in the end, the poor girl failed to make the prince love her, and was faced with the choice to either murder him on his wedding night or dissolve into sea foam, soulless and dead.
Love and death. Death and love and transformation. Mira read for hours, transfixed.
It was one minute after midnight when the door clicked open. Mira heard someone moving around the suite with an absolute lack of stealth, and then a muttered:
âAsshole. Where are you?â
So not housekeeping. And not Felix.
It was Blue.
Mira sighed and climbed off the bed to confront him. They nearly collided in the doorway.
âStupid girl,â Blue said, his lip curling.
âMiss me?â she said.
He made no attempt to move away from her. He stood so close she could feel the heat radiating off his body. Heâd changed his clothes since this morning and was wearing a dusky purple shirt with an anatomically correct heart on the chest.
âAt least youâre not naked,â he said.
âBecause if I was, youâd pass out from the glory of it.â
âNo,â he said. âThat is not why. Whereâs Felix? He chewed me out on the phone over you. He must like youâfor all the wrong reasons.â
Mira rolled her eyes. â Maybe he doesnât approve of your bad behavior. You knowâbreaking into my room, assaulting me, kidnapping me? I suppose that didnât occur to you.â
âI know my brother better than you do. Bad behavior is his specialty.â
Mira waited a moment, her spine rigid, staring at him while he stared back. Finally, she eased up on the teeth sheâd been clenching and said, âWell, heâs not here. Good-bye.â
But Blue didnât move from his spot. He braced his hands on either side of the doorway, the muscles in his arms tensing. âSo you fall for the same shit every girl falls for? You think youâll be the special oneâthe girl who lasts? That the rules donât apply to you?â
âWhat rules?â
âAll you need to know is to stay away from him,â he said, leaning forward aggressively. âThatâs your rule. Stay. Away.â
Mira jerked back to avoid himâthen was annoyed that sheâd yielded. As soon as she moved, Blue pushed into the bedroom, eyes flicking to the bed.
âReading fairy tales, how sweet. Is Felix your Prince Charming? Did he bring you flowers yet?â
âI donât see why you care. Canât you find someone else in this city to harass?â
âYouâre not my victim, Mira. If you were, you would know it.â Blue sat down on the bed, one leg of his ragged jeans pulled onto the coverlet. â âCinderella,â â he murmured. âDo you like the part where the shoe fills up with the stepsisterâs blood? The prince thinks heâs found his mysterious girl from the ball, and then a little bird tells him to check out the trail of blood; heâs got an imposter on the back of his horse. Itâs pretty twisted.â
âJust like you,â she said.
âThatâs right,â he said, his eyes meeting hers, something severe flickering in their depths. âJust like me. Just like my brother.â
The way he said it made her shiver. She didnât want to be alone with him anymore. âI think you should go.â
âOh, do you now? Too bad. I need to talk to Felix. And unlike you, I actually live here.â Blue resumed flipping through the book, ignoring her. Then he ate the rest of her cookie.
Irritated, Mira retreated to the living room and put on the TV. She got about two minutes of peace before Blue threw himself down next to her.
âSo what kind of lines has he been feeding you? Iâm curious.â
âHeâs not hitting on me,â Mira said through gritted teeth. âHeâs helping me find my
