San Francisco. Thatâs how you two had it planned, right?â
Sam knew she was gulping like a beached fish, but she couldnât form words. Why would Ryan leave her to take the blame for stealing the horses?
âOkay Linc, if youâre done blowinâ off steam, letâs start over.â
Sam jumped. Sheâd been so focused on Linc, sheâd forgotten Sheriff Ballard. He took out a small notebook and pen, in a routine manner.
âYou have two missing horses. Thatâs all I know for sure. Now, forget the speculation. Donât tell me what you think happened, just list the facts, starting when you realized the horses were missing.â
âOkay, Sheriff,â Linc said. When he squared his shoulders and tugged briskly at his shirt cuffs, Sam felt chills.
Sheâd rather see Linc ranting.
He must have realized bluster would get him nowhere with Sheriff Ballard, because Linc seemed almost businesslike.
This was a far more threatening Linc Slocum, because the sheriff might take him seriously.
âI realized Apache Hotspot and her foal were missing exactlyââLinc glanced at his heavy gold watchââthirty-five minutes ago.â
âSo you called my office right away,â Sheriff Ballard said, consulting his notes. âThatâs good. In cases like this, the first twenty-four hours are critical.â
âDo you have any fences down?â Dallas asked. âWere the front gates to your place open?â
âThey didnât wander away, if thatâs what youâre thinkinâ,â Linc said.
âWhen did you see them last?â Sheriff Ballard continued.
âLast night,â Linc said. âWeâthatâs Ryan and Iâwere standing in the barn discussing how he was supposed to take the mare to Sterling Stables and leave her to be bred.â
âAnd now Ryanâs out of town,â the sheriff said.
âYes sir,â Linc answered.
Sheriff Ballard looked up from his notes. âSo, he couldâve taken the horses to Sterling Stables beforehand.â
Linc looked uneasy. Though he wasnât much of a father, he didnât want any blame placed on Ryan.
All he said was, âThe mare never got there.â
Sheriff Ballard exhaled loudly.
âOkay, the first thing we need to doââ Sheriff Ballard began.
âSheriff, excuse me. This is where I need to step in.â Karl Mannix did just that, taking a stride forward.
Sheriff Ballard nodded as if heâd been expecting this interruption.
Karl Mannix cleared his throat, then introduced himself. While Sheriff Ballard made notes, Mannix explained he was employed by Linc Slocum, then turned to the dayâs events.
âItâs true Ryan didnât want that mare taken from her foal,â Mannix said. He paused, blinking. His eyes looked watery behind his glasses. âBut earlier today, I saw him with this young lady.â
Mannix cleared his throat again. Was he trying to underline the significance of seeing her with Ryan?
âYou know how Samantha is,â Linc said, keeping his voice level. âShe convinced him to turn the Appys loose to run with that wild bunch.â
âNo, I did not!â
Sheriff Ballard held up his hand. âLinc, thatâs the kind of speculation I want you to avoid.â
âOf course,â Linc said. âSorry.â
But he looked satisfied that heâd made his point.
âYouâre sure it was Samantha you saw with Ryan?â Sheriff Ballard asked Mannix.
âPretty sure,â Mannix said.
âIt was me,â Sam said.
âWell, what if she did go out for a drive with him?â Gram tsked her tongue. âI said it was fine.â
Beside her, Dad sighed. He sounded disappointed, and that hurt.
âIt just seemed strange to me that Ryan would be way out here, when he was supposed to be dropping the mare off so far in the opposite direction,â Mannix said.
