chicken, and baked beans on our plates. The church ladies serving us say chirpily, âArenât yâall the cutest girls!â
âWeâre the Cheetah Girls,â Dorinda says proudly.
âMabel, look at those necklaces they got around their necks.â
âOh, these are our Cheetah Girl chokers,â Bubbles pipes up, taking over the conversation. Iâm surprised she doesnât tell them that weâre selling them, so I turn to her and whisper, âAre we still selling the chokers?â
âTo anybody with a ducket in a bucket!â
Right then, Derek Hambone comes over with his boy, Mackerel Johnson, and another tall, skinny guy we donât know. Now that the fashion show is over, Derek is back in his âstreet uniformââa navy blue and red windbreaker with matching sweatpants.
He likes clothes from this designer, Johnny BeDownâa lot of the kids in our school wear his stuff, but
we
think itâs tick-tacky because it has too many letters on it. Like Bubbles says, âWhy should we wear clothes with anybody elseâs name on it but our own?â
âHey, Cheetah Girls! Glad to see you in the house,â Derek says. Then he reaches over and kisses Bubbles on the cheek! I canât believe she let him do that!
âWe figured out how to make the chokers,â Bubbles blurts out, fingering the one around her neck. âWeâve already taken orders for five more.â
âThatâs cool,â Derek says, kinda laughing. âItâs all good in the âhood.â
What does Bubbles mean, sheâs taken orders for five more chokers? She didnât tell
me
anything!
Nada. Vampira
-tooth. Mackerel winks at me. I guess Iâd better be
super-simpática
too to make up for what happened. âWhat program are you in?â I ask Mackerel, even though it kills me. I feel my face turning
rosa
.
âDesign,â he mumbles. His voice is so soft, I can hardly hear it.
âDid you like the clothes in the show?â I ask, trying to seem like Iâm interested in talking with him. I guess itâs okayâas long as he doesnât start biting my neck!
âThey
awwriight
, but Iâm trying to flow with the street vibe,â he continuesâlike heâs flossing about his design skills.
âWhose clothes do you like?â
âI dig Trace Gear, you know what Iâm saying?â
âOh, I like that, too,â I say, telling a
poco
fiberoni. I hate their clothes, because theyâre too baggyâbut Iâm not going to tell
him
that,
está bien
?
âYou know what? Iâll buy another choker from you, if youâre still selling them,â Mackerel says. Then he
winks
at me.
Cuatro yuks
âheâs
flirting
with me!
If he would just keep his âtrapâ shut, so I wouldnât have to look at his teeth, maybe I wouldnât mind. Those teeth of his give me âthe spookies.â He ought to get them fixed, you know?
âOkay,
está bien
,â I say to Mackerel. Then I pull on Bubblesâs sleeve and ask her what to do.
âThatâs coolâweâve got enough chokers. We can handle it,â Bubbles says confidently âThat is, if itâs okay with you, Derek?â
Bubbles is trying to be sooo charming to Derekâand he is eating it up like, well, a Red Snapper!
âItâs cool with Mr. DUHâyou know what Iâm saying?â
Bubbles blushes deep purple. See, Derek has the initials of his first, middle, and last name shaved on the back of his head. Thatâs how they roll in Detroit, where he comes fromâbut we think that look is so played. Besides, with initials like his, he shouldnât be broadcasting them,
está bien
? Thatâs why we always make fun of him. But
la gente
at school obviously told him about
that
nickname, too.
âYou know ⦠Iâm sorry about what happened,â Bubbles says, and she seems like she
