spluttering stopped. âWhat do you mean, shot at?â
She filled him in on her frightening escapade.
âWhat did the police have to say about this?â
âI havenât told them yet.â
âBloody hell, Maggie! Call them right away and then pack your bags and get back here.â
âCanât do that. Iâve promised to help Kate.â
âYou wonât be able to help anyone if youâre dead!â
âThe reason I was shot at has absolutely nothing to do with Guthrieâs disappearance.â
âHow do you work that out? Womenâs intuition?â
Maggie decided to let that one pass. âNo. Itâs because of the money.â
âWhat money? You didnât mention any money.â His voice seemed to be reaching fever pitch again.
âI found some. Quite a lot, in fact. Large bills, too. Iâm not sure what it all means yet. Canât tell you any more over the phone.â Then, before he could butt in again, she continued. âI told Kate I had to talk to you first before we took the case. After all, youâre the boss.â
âSure sounds like it!â He paused. âYouâre not licensed, Maggie.â
âThatâs why Iâm calling,â she answered in her most patient voice. âTo put the investigation on a business basis and then you can contact a couple of leads.â
âThen what?â
âYou can join me up here. A break will do you good.â
âAnd whoâs going to look after the office? And donât say Henny!â
âCouldnât you put things on hold for a few days so that she only has to answer the phone and take messages? I really need you here.â She paused for a moment to give him time to think.
âI donât know, Maggie. Who do you want me to call down here?â
âYou could call on Ray Teasdaleâthatâs where Kate met Guthrie. Then on to Nordstrom. According to Kate, heâs known her husband since way back. Also,â she continued before he could interrupt, âheâs Douglas Guthrieâs sonâs boss.â
âWhoa. One thing at a time.â He listened while she went over the list again. âNow,â he said. âWhat about this Kate? Is it possible for me to talk to her?â
âSheâs just outside the booth. Iâll get her.â
When Kate came on the line, Nat told her, âIâve just listened to Maggie, but I think our agency is too far away from the Cariboo area to be much help. Are you sure thereâs no one closer to where you live?â
âWilliams Lakeâs a very small town, Mr. Southby,â Kate answered. âIâve had no help from the police, and our ranch manager, Hendrix, insists that Iâm paranoid and worrying about nothing. And if you canât help me,â she ended tearfully, âI donât know what Iâm going to do. â
Nat wasnât very good with tears. âYou understand that it would have to be on a business basis?â
âYes, anything. After Maggie was shot at . . . Iâm so scared . . . â
âProbably nothing to do with your husband being missing. Put Maggie back on,â he mumbled gruffly. Kate handed over the phone. âOkay,â he said, âIâll start on it, but Iâm not agreeing to anything final until Iâve investigated Teasdale and Nordstrom and youâve spoken to the police. And Maggie, please, please donât find any more dead bodies.â

MONDAY MORNING BROUGHT RAIN and Corporal Brossard to the ranch.
âYou havenât heard anything new?â Kate asked as she showed him into the kitchen.
The two dogs jumped out of their baskets and greeted the corporal with drool and enthusiasm. He pushed one dog down and then the other. âIâm sorry. Your husband seems to have disappeared without a trace.â He stood just inside the room, water dripping from his
