give it much thought anymore. Heâs a man grown now. Itâs his decision to make.â
âUmm. Yes. Well . . . would you walk me back to my house, Frank?â
âOf course. It would be my pleasure.â
Frank took Laraâs arm and they began strolling up the boardwalk. The gunfighter and the lady.
They were greeted by merchants and customers alike as they walked slowly up the townâs main street . . . and received many curious looks.
âPeople are going to talk about this, Lara,â Frank cautioned her.
âLet them. Iâm used to people talking about me.â
âOh?â
âWeâll discuss that some other time.â
âAs you wish.â
âWhat the hell is that?â a man shouted, pointing down the main street.
Frank and Lara turned to look. Frank sighed.
âIs that a woman riding that mule astride?â Lara asked.
âYes,â Frank replied. âAnd sheâs carrying a shotgun.â
âShe looks like a . . . well . . . a witch.â
âClose enough,â Frank said. âThatâs Alberta Davis. From a little town called Deweyville.â
âWhat in the world is she doing here?â
Alberta was drawing closer.
âLooking for Val Dooley, I imagine.â
âWhy?â
âSheâs sweet on him.â
âVal Dooley is sweet on that . . . pathetic-looking person?â Lara asked. âYou canât be serious!â
âNo, Lara. She is sweet on him.â
âHow do you know all that?â
âItâs a long story, believe me.â
Lara stepped closer to him. âYou simply must tell me all about it sometime.â
Before Frank could reply, Alberta yelled. âI see you, Val Dooley!â
âShe thinks Iâm Val Dooley,â Frank said.
âOh?â
âVal Dooley, you whoor-chasing no-good!â
âDid that woman just call me a whore?â Lara asked. âThe nerve of her! How dare she!â
âI donât believe she was specifically referring to you, Lara.â
âIâll give that skinny trollop a piece of my mind!â
Alberta leveled the old repeat shotgun and yelled, âYouâll pay for toying with my affections, Val Dooley!â
âIâm not Val Dooley, damnit!â Frank hollered.
âHow dare you curse me!â Alberta yelled.
âI believe that woman is going to fire that weapon,â Lara said.
âI hope not,â Frank replied.
âI waited for you, Val!â Alberta yelled. âI waited and waited and you left me in the lurch, you sorry piece of white trash!â
âNow you hold on, Alberta,â Frank yelled. âI tell you I am not Val Dooley. I just look a lot like him.â
âLiar, liar, pants on fire!â Alberta hollered. She put her heels to the mule and the mule started running.
âOh, hell!â Frank said.
Just an instant before the shotgun boomed, Frank grabbed Lara and jumped into the door of the barbershop.
Lara screamed, Alberta cussed, the shotgun boomed, and the barber hollered and hit the floor as the shop window was shattered by buckshot.
EIGHT
Alberta whooped and hollered and put the mule into a run. She galloped past the barbershop and the shotgun boomed again. The buckshot hit the striped barber pole and started it spinning and squeaking.
âWhat the hell is going on?â the barber yelled from his position on the floor. âWho is that crazy woman?â
âAlberta Davis,â Frank told him, speaking from his position on the floor. âHer brother is the sheriff over in Deweyville.â
âWoman called me a whore,â Lara said, pressing against Frank.
Frank was having a difficult time concentrating with Lara close against him and the scent of her perfume in his head.
âWell, her brother damn sure better come get her before somebody puts some lead in her!â the barber said.
The shotgun boomed again just as Frank was getting to
