chewing thoughtfully. âI donât understand you. Every time I think I have you figured out you do something to surprise me.â
âLike what?â
âLike yesterday. You invited me to dinner, but I never dreamed youâd take me someplace as elegant as Henryâs.You were the perfect gentleman all evening and then today, you were soâ¦â
âLow and disgusting.â
âExactly.â She nodded righteously. âOne minute youâre the picture of charm and culture and the next youâre badgering me with your wisecracks.â
âIâm a tease, remember?â
âThe problem is I canât deal with you when I donât know what to expect.â
âThatâs my charm.â He reached for a second piece of pizza. âWomen are said to adore the unexpected in a man.â
âNot this woman,â she informed him promptly. âI need to know where I stand with you.â
âA little to the left.â
âJoe, please, Iâm not joking. I canât have you pulling stunts like you did today. Iâve lived a good, clean life for the past twenty-eight years. Two days with you has ruined my reputation with the company. I canât walk into the office and hold my head up any longer. I hear people whispering and I know theyâre talking about me.â
âUs,â he corrected. âTheyâre talking about us.â
âThatâs even worse. If they want to talk about me and a man, Iâd rather it was Paul. Just how much longer is this remodeling project going to take, anyway?â As far as Cait was concerned, the sooner Joe and his renegade crew were out of her office, the sooner her life would return to normal.
âNot too much longer.â
âAt the rate youâre progressing, Webster, Rodale and Missen will have offices on the moon.â
âBefore the end of the year, I promise.â
âYes, but just how reliable are your promises?â
âIâm being good, arenât I?â
âI suppose,â she conceded ungraciously, jerking a stack of mail away from Joe as he started to sort through it.
âWhatâs this?â Joe asked, rescuing a single piece of paper before it fluttered to the floor.
âA Christmas list. Iâm going shopping tomorrow.â
âI shouldâve known youâd be organized about that, too.â He sounded vaguely insulting.
âIâve been organized all my life. It isnât likely to change now.â
âThatâs why I want you to lighten up a little.â He continued studying her list. âWhat time are you going?â
âThe stores open at eight and I plan to be there then.â
âI suppose youâve written down everything you need to buy so you wonât forget anything.â
âOf course.â
âSounds sensible.â His remark surprised her. He scanned her list, then yelped, âHey, Iâm not on here!â He withdrew a pen from his shirt pocket and added his own name. âDo you want me to give you a few suggestions about what Iâd like?â
âI already know what Iâm getting you.â
Joe arched his brows. âYou do? And please donât say ânothing.ââ
âNo, but itâll be something appropriateâlike a muzzle.â
âOh, Caitlin, darling, you injure me.â He gave her one of his devilish smiles, and Cait could feel herself weakening. Just what she didnât want! She had every right to be angry with Joe. If he hadnât brought that pizza, sheâd have slammed the door in his face. Wouldnât she? Sure, she would! But sheâd always been susceptible to Italian food. Her only other fault was Paul. She did love him. Noone seemed to believe that, but sheâd known almost from the moment theyâd met that she was destined to spend the rest of her life loving Paul Jamison. Only sheâd rather do it as his wife
