hands.
    “Driving like a maniac.”
“Oh God.” Ransom sunk into a chair.
The ER doors whooshed open and Rebel ran in with Gareth and Axel.
“Is he okay?” Gareth almost shouted.
I explained again to Rebel and Gareth what I knew. Stan arrived and then they all filled him in. I sat down and stared at the tiles of the emergency room floor.
“You were following him?” Gareth asked me.
“Yeah, I was less than a mile behind him on my bike. He should have never taken the bike as angry as he was.”
“What do you mean?” Gareth’s brows furrowed.
    “Where is he?!”
I looked up to see Harley’s father speaking with a nurse. His face was beet red and he was wringing his hands. I stood up and walked over to the nurse’s station.
“He’s in the back. They’re looking him over now.”
I was pulled away by my bicep and was surprised to find Axel staring me down.
    “Let’s talk,” he ordered.
I followed Axel to the vending machines and he turned to look at me. I met his eyes because, dammit, I’d done my best to make sure Harley never got hurt.
“What?” I snapped. “I was right behind him!”
“What set him off, Axel? Why was Harley riding a motorcycle in this weather?”
“It’s a long story, and I don’t feel like rehashing it. Harley blew out of that garage full throttle and it was just luck that I caught up to him. He almost went over, Axel! He would have if I hadn’t gotten there in time.”
“I’m sorry,” Axel blew out a breath. “When Gareth gets panicked, it seems to rub off on me. I know you’d give your life to protect Harley’s.”
    “Fucking right I would.”
Axel clapped me on the back and pulled me into a half hug. I was getting used to it now. Somehow, Gareth had rubbed off on Axel the killer. He was a bit softer. I couldn’t say shit. Harley was rubbing off on me. We walked back to the waiting room and I noticed Harley’s father was gone.
    “Where’s Harley’s dad?” I asked.
Gareth pointed down the hall. “He demanded to see his son.”
“Ha! Now he has a son?” I snarled.
Shouting came from down the hall and then the unmistakable sound of Harley’s devastated voice floated out to me. I ran through a hallway full of people, pushing them out of the way. I slammed through the door and found Harley on the floor on his knees.
“Get out!” I ground out at Harley’s father through gritted teeth.
“Excuse me? You have no right to tell me what to do!”
“Get. Out! Harley doesn’t need this right now!” I shouted
    “Security!”
“Oh yes, please call them.” I leaned into his face. “It’s about to get ugly.”
Two men came from behind and tried to subdue me. I fought them both off and two more arrived. Harley was still on the floor, sobbing about how sorry he was, and a rage came over me I hadn’t felt since I was deployed.
“STOP!” Axel roared. “Let him go or you’ll be dealing with us.” Axel motioned to Hammer and Buster behind him. “And we don’t fight fair.”
“Mr. Payne,” Gareth stepped in between the chaos. “Please, just go home. This isn’t helping Harley.”
“He took my son’s motorcycle and wrecked it! He had no business —”
“Get out,” Gareth said forcefully. “We will take care of Harley. Don’t worry, I’m sure the bike can be fixed.”
I got a death glare from Harley’s father before he huffed and left the room. The security guards holding me let go and I moved to Harley’s side.
“Hey,” I said softly. “Are you okay? Do you need help getting up?”
“I told you,” Harley whispered. “I told you he’d be mad.”
“You need to be in bed.” I placed an arm under him and helped him up, carefully placing him in bed. I noticed a red mark on Harley’s face and balled my fists. “Did he hit you?”
“He was mad, he didn’t mean it —”
A roar escaped me and then I was blasting past everyone in the room, my mission to find Harley’s father front and center. A hand clasped over my
