geeky? No way.
âIf thatâs what it takes to get your attention, then Iâm glad that Iâm taller than you,â he said simply.
Chapter 4
Zane noted that Georgeanne blinked at him as if she thought she wasnât hearing correctly, but she smiled naturally. âIâm glad youâre tall, too. You canât think how tiresome it is to tower above most men.â
She didnât know, he decided. She had no idea how beautiful she was. That had to be why she wasnât picking up on his meaning. Her long curly lashes fluttered as she looked away.
âYou canât think how wonderful it is to find a woman who wonât make me feel Iâm about to crush her or give her a stiff neck,â Zane countered. âYouâre the perfect height, Georgie. Donât ever let anyone tell you otherwise.â
Georgeanne looked at him in an uncertain way, then gave him a firm smile. âI wonât. The best thing about being tall is that Iâm well suited for things like painting and hauling ladders around.â
Zane laughed, realizing Georgeanne had long ago accepted the fact that she was constitutionally incapable of sitting back while a man did all the work. If there was work to be done, she probably felt insulted if she wasnât allowed to do her share.
âIâm looking forward to meeting your dogs,â he said. âThey arenât the kind that chew up any male encroaching on their territory, are they?â
She still didnât take his interest in her personally. Or she refused to. Well, heâd just see about that.
âBasically, they only want to be loved.â Georgeanneâs face bore a puzzled expression, as if she couldnât imagine why he might want to visit her home. âI only have two dogs now. Iâve managed to find good homes for the others.â
Two cheese enchilada dinners arrived, and Georgeanne looked thankful to have something other than his face to concentrate on. Before he could drag her attention back to him, someone interrupted.
âExcuse me.â A teenage girl stood beside their table, gazing reverently at Zane. âMay I please have your autograph?â
Zane glanced up and smiled. âIâm not Hunter Howell, you know.â
The girl gave a deep sigh and held out her book anyway. âYouâre not?â
âIâm not.â Zane signed his name in a thick, dark scrawl across a blank sheet of notebook paper. âIâm just a doctor. Not a very exciting person at all.â
The girl accepted the notebook, studied the signature, and went back to her parentsâ table with a posture eloquent of disappointment.
âYou have the signature of a true doctor,â Georgeanne said, with her deep rich chuckle. âI suppose thatâs why she believed you.â
Zane laughed. âYou should know. Youâve been seeing it long enough. Youâre part of the reason why I decided to come see Dr. Baghriâs clinic for myself. I wanted to get a look at the woman who wrote me so faithfully.â
âIn that case, I hope you werenât disappointed.â She looked, as he had thought she might, totally astonished. âIâd hate to think my personal appearance put you off participating in Dr. Baghriâs clinic.â
âOh, I wasnât disappointed, Georgie. I wasnât disappointed at all.â He smiled at her, a slow, hot smile that came straight from thoughts of how she would look without her clothes. âYou were exactly what I hoped for, right down to the tips of those boots.â
Georgeanne appeared to stop breathing while she stared at him.
Zane looked back at her. Obviously, he had taken her by surprise, and whatever she expected from him, she had not expected an interest in her. He noted, with amusement, that she appeared to be searching her brain for an alternate meaning to his words.
âIâm glad,â she said at length. âDoes it bother
