we?â
âNot nice, Mols.â
She raised her eyebrows. âIâm not paid to be nice.â
âActually, I pay you quite nicely to be nice.â
âNot here you donât. I use up all my nice at Averyâs House. This pub is my territory.â
âAnd besides, youâre a Bellini?â
âExactly. Nice is practically a liability in this family.â Molly motioned him farther into the booth so she could perch on the edge. âSo really, howâs it going?â
âAre you asking as the town gossip? Or as my friend?â
Molly put her hand to her chest in mock insult. âI am not the town gossip!â
Pops looked up and grinned. âNo, that jobâs already taken by her mother.â
âYou be quiet, Pops.â Molly pointed a French fry his way.
âItâs fine,â Ethan finally answered. âFine, but weird.â
âWhat has she been doing? Is she in the office with you? Sheâs not in the office, right?â She shook her head. âNo, that would be beyond awkward.â
âSheâs been ⦠out in costume both days.â
âIn costume? In this heat? Are you trying to kill her?â
âI think itâs mutual avoidance at this point.â
No need to point out that heâd engineered said avoidance with creative scheduling.
âYou planning to use that strategy till she leaves?â
âMaybe. Itâs working so far.â
âSo no come-to-Jesus meetings? No confessions? No late-night apologies for dropping you like a hot potato and disappearing in a puff of smoke?â
Ethan raised one eyebrow. âNot that weâll be dramatic.â
âIâm just asking.â Molly shrugged. âI mean, how do you spend two days with your former fiancée and not discuss things? I donât get it.â
âSheâs barely spoken since Friday, Mols.â He dipped a fry in his ketchup, trying not to give away how painful itâd been to not talk to the woman heâd once envisioned his entire future around. âItâs in the past. Talking about it now wonât change what happened. Thereâs no point.â
Right. Maybe if he said it enough times he could force himself to believe he meant it.
She shook her head. âI still donât buy it. It never made sense. One day things were all roses and sunshine, and then Avery, and then boom! Gone.â
âWe both know her life was hardly roses and sunshine. She had a lot to handle that summer. Maybe she finally just broke.â
âWell, you handled it.â
âI wasnât dealing with the kind of stuff she was dealing with.â
âNo.â Mollyâs jaw went tight. âYou were just dealing with an injury that changed your entire life plan. And then Avery.â
âYou know that doesnât begin to compare. But talking about it isnât going to change what happened. Itâll just bring up a lot ofâstuff that neither of us wants to relive. Thereâs no point.â
Molly sighed, shaking her head. âI have been training you for years, and still you are nothing but a hopeless man. Sure you donât want to marry me and show her you havenât been waiting around for her to return?â
âSorry. Iâve heard youâre off the market. Newest wonder on Italian match dotâow!â Ethan ducked as Molly whacked his head with her order pad.
She slid out of the booth, stealing one last fry as she did so. âThatâs it. Iâm putting your singles profile live as soon as I get out of here tonight.â
As she flounced back to the kitchen, Ethan turned back to his dad, who was shoveling the last of his lasagna into his mouth. Of course he wanted to sit Josie down and see if he could finally understand what had sent her flying off in the middle of the night. Of course he thought he deserved an explanation after all this time.
But even though itâd been
