time to waste.â
âOkay, we can set up a time for a home visit and go from there. My secretary said that you wanted me to stop by today, but Iâm booked for the remainder of the afternoon. Can we shoot for another day this week?â
âSure,â Theresa said and gave Angel directions to her house.
âBy the way, how did you find out about us?â asked Angel before hanging up.
âOh, I donât know. I think I came across your Web site or something.â Theresa told her good-bye and quickly hung up the phone.
Theresaâs rushed good-bye unnerved Angel, especially when she remembered that Guardian Angelâs Web site wasnât up and running yet.
Â
Â
Theresa looked down at a family portrait, rubbing her hand over the picture of her husband. âGod, this has to work,â she prayed. Theresa thought Angel King seemed nice enough on the phone, but there was no telling how sheâd react if she knew that the woman sheâd just agreed to help had spent the last eight years living the life Angel was supposed to have.
Chapter 9
âThe less he remembers about that night, the better.â
â Lawson Kerry
Â
âThis so-called emergency better be good,â warned Sullivan, barging into Lawsonâs living room. Reginell and Kina were seated next to Lawson on the sofa.
âDo you think she wouldâve called you if it wasnât important?â snapped Reginell.
Sullivan smacked her lips. âWhatâs your problem?â
âIâm just not in the mood for your mouth today.â
âDid I miss anything?â asked Angel as she breathlessly entered the room. âI wouldâve been here sooner, but I got tied up with work.â
âYouâre fine. Have a seat,â instructed Lawson.
Sullivan looked around the room. âAll right, the gangâs all here, so whatâs up?â
Lawson closed her eyes briefly to collect her thoughts. âSomething happened today, and I want you all to tell me what you think I should do.â
âGarrett dumped you, didnât he?â guessed Sullivan. âHow many times have I told you that he wasnât going to let you lead him on forever, Lawson?â
Lawson shook her head. âWe had a little tiff, but thatâs not whatââ
âWhat did you guys fight about?â questioned Kina.
âI donât want to talk about it. Garrett isnât the reason I wanted to see you.â
Reginell replied, âWell, itâs out there now, so you might as well confess.â
Lawson relented. âHe asked me to marry him after Reggieâs party, but thatâs not why I called you overââ
Angelâs mouth dropped. âGarrett proposed, and you kept this from us for three whole days?â
âYou didnât even tell me. Iâm your sister!â complained Reginell.
Sullivan inspected Lawsonâs hand. âWhere is the ring? Or is the diamond too small to be seen with the naked eye?â
âI canât believe you didnât say a word about it while we were out Saturday,â said Kina.
âLadies, please !â cut in Lawson. âIâll fill you in on all the details later. Right now, thereâs a more pressing matter at hand.â
âWhat could be more pressing than you getting married?â asked Angel.
Lawson took a deep breath. âSeeing Namonâs father today.â
A hush fell over the room. Sullivanâs eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets. âYou saw Mark? Are you sure it wasnât just someone who looked like him?â
Lawson nodded. âIt was him. Iâm positive.â
âDid he track you down?â quizzed Kina. âDid someone tell him about Namon?â
âNo, I saw him at work. He teaches at North Central. Get this, not only does he teach at the school, but heâs also been assigned as my mentor.â
âGirl, stop!â shrieked
