Vanessa.
âOhmigod!â squeals Renata.
âI donât believe it,â gasps Vanessa. âHeâs got groupies!â
âHeâs signing their clothes!â Renata screeches.
âHeâs signing their bodies!â Vanessa shrieks.
âThey love it!â giggles Renata.
â He loves it!â sniggers Vanessa.
âItâs tragic,â I say.
âPathetic,â says Renata.
âBoys are like that,â says Vanessa. âThey love being chased by younger girls.â
âMy fatherâs like that,â I suddenly blurt out. âHeâs got a girlfriend half his age!â
âYour father?â says Renata.
âSince when?â says Vanessa.
âItâs truly disgusting,â I say. âHe thinks itâs a secret. He thinks Mum doesnât know.â
âOh, Mia!â says Renata. âYou poor thing!â
âMy dadâs the same,â says Vanessa. âHe goes to those menâs clubs in the city, where the girls dance on the tables.â
âHave you seen those girls?â says Renata. âHave you seen the G-strings they wear!â
âImagine the bikini wax!â says Vanessa.
âSome of them wax all over ,â says Renata.
âI know !â says Vanessa.
One moment Iâm sharing my deepest, darkest secret with my two best friends. The next moment it feels as if Iâm in a hair salon, discussing body wax and gossiping about tabletop dancers.
WILL
When I tell Dave about the Year 7 girls, he gets that look on his face.
âWhat about me, Will? Iâm in Year 7! Did you tell them about me?â
âI said you were already taken, Dave. Engaged to Maria Sharapova.â
Dave laughs loudly. âYou did not, Will!â
âBut Maria wants to break it off. Sheâs heard about you and Venus Williams.â
Dave shakes his head. âYou did not say that, Will!â
âVenus and Serena!â
âTell the truth, Will!â
â And Rafael Nadal. It was mixed doubles, I told them.â
âStop it, Will! Not with Raffa, okay?â
âWhy not, Dave? Heâs a good-looking guy?â
âWill! Raffaâs a man! And Iâm not like that , okay?â
âSorry, Dave. I was just stirring.â
âThen say it. Dave Holland is not gay. Go on. Say it, Will.â
âDave Holland is not gay.â
â And neither is Rafael Nadal. â
âAnd neither is Rafael Nadal.â
I like stirring Dave. Thatâs what big brothers do. Itâs part of our job description. But I also did it to stop the conversation from taking a predictable nosedive. When Dave starts talking about sex, itâs hard to stop him.
â Dave Holland likes girls. Go on. Say it, Will.â
âDave Holland likes girls.â
â Dave Holland likes kissing and hugging girls. â
âDave Holland likes kissing and hugging girls.â
âDave Holland likes grabbingââ
âI think we might stop you right there, Dave.â
MIA
Vanessaâs latest boy-craze is the St Davidâs boys. Most days, after school, we hang around with the St Dâs boys up at the shops. They donât have girls at their school, so they buy us milkshakes and chips and let Vanessa bot their smokes.
The St Dâs boys are okay. Theyâre pretty harmless. They throw their schoolbags onto the road in front of oncoming cars. They jump off walls and risk their lives, just to get our attention. As far as I can see, the most interesting thing about them is that theyâre from another school. I swear Vanessa only raves about them to make the boys at our school jealous.
Weâre outside the milk bar watching the St Dâs boys perform on their skateboards when I see Will and Yorick coming. They are walking along the footpath, deep in conversation, when one of the St Dâs boys falls off his board and goes tumbling into them. Yorick drops his schoolbag
