“Gaby, you will never be comfortable until I’ve proven to you that you have nothing to fear, so tell me your secret so we can move forward.”
“I don’t...”
He cut me off. “Why would you want continue a relationship with me if you’re worried I’ll leave when I find out whatever it is you’re so worried about? Just tell me.”
He was right. There was no point in continuing a relationship that was doomed to fail. No amount of time together would ever soften this blow. I stood, pacing across the room. “I don’t know how,” I said looking down at the floor as I paced. “I’ve never told anyone.”
“Is it something no one knows?”
I paused and shook my head. “No. People know I just never had to tell anyone.”
“Okay... Why don’t you just be blunt?”
I turned glaring at him. “I don’t want to scare the crap out of you.” I then continued my pacing. A light chuckle escaped his lips. “Well I’m glad you find it amusing. Let’s hope you feel that way once you find out.”
“It can’t be that bad,” he said through a grin.
“It is.” I stopped my pacing. “Alright.” I took a deep breath letting it fill my lungs hoping to draw in some courage from it, figuring I’d try a different tactic. “First of all, know that I would never, ever hurt you.”
“I know that,” he said with a half-smile.
“Even if you react badly and want nothing to do with me.”
“I’m not...”
I raised a finger to silence him. He smirked rolling his tongue over his lips, but quieted.
“Remember how we were just kissing on the couch...”
A knowing amused look spread on his handsome face. “Yes?”
“You remember how it ended?” His brow furrowed. I tried again. “You remember how quickly it ended. Like I was there, then I wasn’t.” His face stayed colored with confusion, but he nodded. “I can move really, really quickly.”
“Is that your secret, Gabriella? Because that’s not much...” He silenced as I blurred across the room, faster than his eyes could track.
“That’s part of it.”
Startled, Grayson turned seeing me sitting on his kitchen counter. “Holy. Shit.” His eyes grew wide with shock as he gaped at me.
“I’m going to move again. Please don’t scream.” He slowly nodded. I blurred again coming to sit next to him. I was surprised he didn’t flinch away. “There’s more,” I whispered. Grayson tilted his head up, eyes blinking slowly. I knew he was trying to process it. “If you don’t think you can handle it, I can stop.”
He licked his lips, wetting them. And even in the tense moment, it was still sexy and made me think dirty thoughts. “How much more?”
“A bit.” His eyes widened, so I quickly continued, “but it all sorta wraps around the main thing.”
“Which is?”
I shook my head. “If you’re not okay with just this little bit, then you will definitely not be okay with the big part.”
He shook his head, “Gaby, it’s not that I’m not okay with it. I’m trying to make sense of it and I can’t. So please, just tell me.”
I looked down at my hands. I was wringing them in my lap. “I’m sort of a vampire.” It took me a minute before I could look up to see the expression on Grayson’s face. It was confused.
Before I got a chance to speak, he asked, “How are you ‘sort of’ a vampire? I mean I’ve seen you out in the sun. I’ve watched you eat, food, with garlic. I don’t understand.” So I laid it all out for him. My mother, the transition, the nest, the blood bank. All of it. “So how old are you really?” He raised his eyebrow jokingly.
I giggled, “I really am twenty three.”
“You look younger.”
I nodded. “Once I hit maturity, I stopped aging. The elders aren’t sure if I’m stuck or if I’m aging very slowly. There are very few like me, and none that can go out in the daylight, so the vampire are stumped.” He
