wasnât on her side. âIt wasnât only my choice! Why doesnât anybody get that?â
âBecause you made the announcement,â Kylie explained. âYouâre now the faceâor the voiceâbehind the news. Personally, I support you and the drama kids. Itâs always all about football here in Ashland.â She stood and reached for Alexâs paper bag. âWant me to grab that?â
Alex nodded and watched Kylie walk off to toss the trash.
âDonât be sad,â Ava said quietly, placing her hand on Alexâs. âTheyâll come around. They still all like you.â
âIt doesnât feel that way.â Alex gave her sistera small smile. Ava knew her better than anyone. âWill you talk to Corey and Xander for me at practice?â
âIâll try. But I also have a big Owen thing to deal with at practice today.â
âNothing is bigger than this right now.â Alex wondered how she hadnât predicted her friendsâ reactions. Sheâd stood up in the emergency class president meeting for what she believed was right, and she still thought sheâd made the right choice, but she also needed her friends.
Maybe more than she needed the school musical.
Or a scoreboard.
Sheâd thought getting elected was the hard part. Who knew being on student council was going to be so tricky?
âWant to bet my problem is bigger than yours?â Ava reached into the pocket of her zip-up sweatshirt and slipped out a small box. âCheck out what you-know-who just gave me.â
âOh, wow!â Alex lifted the silver bracelet from the box, momentarily speechless.
âPretty!â Kylie cried, as she slid back into her seat. âI didnât think you wore jewelry, Ave.â
âI donât.â Ava snatched the bracelet andtucked it and the box out of sight.
âIs it a sister gift?â Kylie asked. âHow do I get in on this twin-giving thing?â
âItâs not from me,â Alex admitted, and felt Ava kick her lightly under the table. She bumped her sisterâs shoulder with a laugh. âMaybe another time, Ave.â
âAlââ Ava started.
Alex leaned toward Kylie. âItâs from Avaâs admirer.â
âAdmirer?â Kylie wiggled her eyebrows. âWhy donât I know this? Who?â
âOwen Rooney!â Alex whispered.
The moment sheâd said his name, she sensed sheâd done something wrong. Ava stiffened beside her, while Kylieâs face crumpled.
âHowâhow could you do this to me?â Kylie sputtered at Ava.
âItâs not what it looks like. I didnât do anything. I promise,â Ava said.
âThen why is he giving you jewelry?â Kylieâs eyes clouded with betrayal. âI told you how I felt about him. I trusted you.â
Uh-oh, Alex thought. Does Kylie like Owen? Why hadnât Ava told her? She never would have opened her big mouth.
âIâm not interested in Owen. You have to believe me,â Ava pleaded.
âThen why did he give you that bracelet?â Kylie asked.
âI donât know,â Ava said.
âDid you ever talk to him about me?â Kylie asked.
Alex watched Avaâs face fall. âNot yet. Itâs been really strange at practice. But I am going toââ
âI can see how strange itâs been.â Kylie stood as the bell rang and walked to the door without saying good-bye.
âI feel horrible,â Ava wailed. âI didnât want to hurt her. This is all my fault. Iâm messing everything up.â
âNo, youâre not. Owen is,â Alex insisted, squeezing her sisterâs hand. âBut I know how to fix it. By tomorrow, heâll be over you.â
âWhat about Kylie?â
âLet her cool down, then talk to her. Sheâll come around,â Alex assured her. âJust like you told me Lindsey and Emily
