her,â Josh adds.
âBecause of the excessive brain-wave activity, right?â Zared says.
âProbably,â I say.
Suddenly Nora turns toward me with an unwavering glare. âWhy arenât you telling them the truth?â
Itâs so strange hearing her say this to me, mostly because this has been my line for the last week. But Iâm not going to let Nora characterize me as a liar. Not when thereâs so much at stake.
âI am,â I reply.
âOh yeah?â she says. âThen why leave out the grisly details? They deserve to know exactly what happened to Claire.â
âWhat happened to her?â Piper asks, on the verge of tears.
âIf weâre putting ourselves at risk, we need to know what to expect out there,â Ayesha says.
I give Ayesha a reassuring look. âOf course, butââ
âClaire didnât vanish; she disintegrated ,â Nora interrupts. âOne minute weâre rafting through these rapids, and the next her boat explodes. There was nothing we could do but sit there and watch her die.â
Piperâs hands fly up to her mouth, and Zared swallows hard before casting his eyes to the ground. I wince too, remembering how Claire called out to us for help, the terror in her screams. My thoughts drift to Wyatt and my dad, how maybe their late return is a sign that they suffered the exact same fate she did, and every part of me goes weak.
âItâs my fault,â Piper says, her shoulders slumping forward. âI shouldâve gone with her. I shouldâve been thereââ
âDonât blame yourself,â Nora says gently, like she realizes she may have overstepped. âTrust me, I know itâs hard not to.â she says. âBut to be honest, weâre all victims here.â
None of her words are a comfort to Piper, whose eyes are filling with tears. She turns back toward the cavern with her head bowed.
âNora!â Josh takes her by the arm and leads her a few steps away. âWeâre all upset about Claire. But thereâs a lot we donât know yet, so assuming she died doesnât make a whole lot of sense.â
âThatâs the point. Thereâs way too much we donât know,â Nora says. âSometimes it seems like Davidâs just making everything up as he goes along. So why canât we try to come up with some other solution?â
âPreferably one that doesnât involve us getting blown up or killed,â Zared says wryly.
âWait a second,â I say. âMy dad may not be able to predict everything here, but he knows what heâs talking about. We were able to destroy the Escape, just like he said. Isnât that enough proof that he can handle this situation?â
âIâm not so sure,â Ayesha says, meekly. âThere has to be another way out. Something safer.â
By the hollow sound of her voice, I can tell sheâs frightenedâand I donât blame her for feeling that way. But if Nora keeps creating more skepticism within the group, thereâs a good chance she might splinter off and form another crew that decides to leave Etherworld in search of an alternate way home.
Josh has lost his sister once alreadyâwould he ever let her go again?
Itâs sort of a selfish worry, but without my dad, Josh is really all Iâve got.
âExactly. Six of us went on this mission, and only three of us came back,â Nora says.
âThose are some shitty odds,â Zared mumbles.
âWyatt and my dad will be here any minute,â I say, looking at Josh for some reassurance, but something has changed. The confidence I always see in his eyesâeven now that theyâre grayâis beginning to dim.
âMaybe it wouldnât hurt to have another strategy. Kind of like a fallback,â he says.
I canât believe this. Josh is second-guessing my dad too?
