go into any details about why she could have cheerfully excluded Guy from that description.

âItâs great to be back.â Kit sighed when she stopped by the office Monday morning with a weary-looking Logan. âYou really need a vacation from a vacation. We had so much fun!â She stared after Logan, whoâd gone into his office to take a telephone call.
Melody stared at her grimly. âIâm glad you did,â she said, emphasizing the âyou.â âEmmett landed himself in the hospital with a concussion over the weekend. Guess who got to look after those kids.â
âOh, Lord,â Kit said on a moan. âYou poor thing!â
âI kept reminding myself that theyâre my nieces and nephews,â Melody remarked. âBut it was a very long weekend.â She didnât mention Alistairâs adventure or Guyâs part in it.
âIâm really sorry. If weâd been in town, all of us could have split them up.â
âI shudder to think of the consequences,â Melody mused. âI can see them now, trying to get to each other through downtown Houston at two in the morning.â
âHmm. You might have a point there.â She glanced at her watch. âI have to get to work, or I may not have a job. Have a nice day,â she called, pausing to blow a kiss at her husband through the open door of his office.
Melody wondered at the obviously loving relationship the married couple had, and felt a faint envy. Probably sheâd never know anything like that. Emmett had kissed her, but it had been passionate, not loving. She permitted herself to dream for just a moment about how it would have felt to be loved half to death. Then the phone rang and saved her from any more malingering.
Â
During the time Logan and Kit had been away, Melody hadnât been forced to call on Tom Walker. Thatwas a blessing. He strolled into the office later on the day Logan came back, a little curious, because heâd expected to have someone to advise in Loganâs absence.
âI suppose I had you buffaloed?â he mused in a deep voice with a very faint crisp northwestern accent, his dark eyes twinkling as they met Melodyâs. âThat was just bad timing before, when Logan left town. Iâd already had a hell of a day. You caught the overflow. Iâm sorry if Iâve put you off financial advisors for life.â There was a faint query in his scrutiny.
âYou havenât,â Melody said, and smiled back. âBut we really didnât have anyone with an emergency this time. Arenât you glad?â
âI guess so,â he said wearily. âItâs been a long week. How was the honeymoon?â he asked Logan, who joined them in the outer office.
âNothing like it. Get married and find out for yourself,â he said, chuckling as he shook Tomâs hand.
The older manâs face closed up. âMarriage is not for me,â he said quietly. âIâm not suited for it. Besides, when would I have time for a wife?â he added with a mocking smile. âI work eighteen hours out of every twenty-four. In my spare time, I sleep.â
âThat will get old one day,â Logan told him. He was obviously thinking about Kit and his heart was in his face. âTime can pass you by if you donât pay attention.â
Tom turned away. âIâve got a client due. I just wanted to stop by and welcome you back. Iâll be in touch.â
âDonât forget, weâre having dinner with the Rowena Marshal people next Saturday at the Sheraton.â
âHow could I forget? Ms. Marshal herself phoned to remind me,â he said with a nip in his tone. â After expressing outrage that her business partner had daredto approach us about changing their investments without her knowledge. If you recall, I was against taking their account in the first place. Itâs been nothing short of a
