light hors d’oeuvres along with Chu, a servant of Bret’s that went with him on most excursions involving food.
“Would you like some shrimp, sir?” she asked Carlos, and he eyed her from head to toe but mostly stared at her cleavage.
He smirked then winked as he took a shrimp, dipped it in the cocktail sauce, and stared at her as if she would be turned on.
“It’s so nice to see you, Melissa,” he stated then placed his hand against her thigh. She would have loved to pull away, but that wouldn’t be smart. The man could kill with looks alone.
She smiled appreciatively as if pleased that he remembered her.
“Nice to see you, too, sir.”
He chuckled, and she stood up straight to move toward Chico so he could have a shrimp.
He blatantly eyed her ass and reached to touch it, but she casually moved toward Bret to offer him the tray of food.
“What’s this ‘sir’ stuff, Melissa?” Carlos asked as he leaned back in the chair and took in the full sight of her. She knew his game, and she could play him as well as he thought he was playing her.
“I’ve often fantasized about your voice saying my name,” he teased then took a sip from his vodka and tonic.
“Ahh...I have shared the same dream, my friend, except in mine she is moaning my name,” Chico added, and they chuckled.
“I’ve got you both beat because mine was not a fantasy but a reality,” Bret stated proudly as he caressed her ass and pulled her closer.
Melissa pulled away as the other men roared.
“Lucky fucking bastard. I didn’t know she was yours,” Carlos said then took another shrimp from the platter that Melissa set down on the table.
“That’s because I’m not his, Carlos,” she stated then looked at Bret. “Plus, one not-so-satisfying fuck could hardly bind me to any man.”
Carlos and Chico roared with laughter as they nearly spilled their drinks. One look at Bret and she saw that he was irritated, and his eyes looked very strange.
He stood up and grabbed her by the arm.
Squeezing her upper arm tightly, he whispered in her ear, but his words cut short as he inhaled next to her. What was up with men sniffing her lately? Did her deodorant stop working? She wanted to sniff her own pits, but she didn’t want to make it obvious.
“We’ll talk later. Show some respect, or I’ll offer you to them for dessert.” He squeezed her arm hard enough to cause bruising then abruptly released it.
Chu gave her a warning look, indicating that he saw it was a close call as well. She knew she shouldn’t have gotten so upset so quickly, but Bret put her on edge.

The time passed slowly with the three assholes talking about drug deals, money, and then something interesting that caught her attention. She thought she heard incorrectly, but then Bret tossed the words around. “African diamonds.”
Her ears perked up, but she hid her interest from the men. Chu came over and began talking with her. She was good at conversing with one person while listening in on other conversations, and it had served her well in the past.
“So, how is your aunt?” Chu asked.
Melissa smiled. Chu was a nice guy despite his professional position, if she could call it professional.
“She just came home the other day. She looks good, and the doctors think they got all the cancer.”
“That’s fantastic news,” he stated, leaning closer and covering her hand with his own. He paused close to her, and when she looked up, his eyes held a look of concern. He and Melissa picked at the cherries from the container at the bar.
“What?” she asked him, and he glanced toward Bret then back at her.
“Who have you been hanging out with lately?”
She had the feeling something was up with Chu’s line of questioning.
    “No one, why?”
“No new guy in your life?”
She chuckled. “Yeah, like I want to go down that road again.”
    He laughed halfheartedly.
“Did you meet a guy tonight, at the bar?”
Her eyes widened, and she glanced at
