store window, a few feet in front of them, staring at them in wide-eyed shock.
    â€œWe’re caught,” Samantha murmured.

chapter 15
Slashed
B ree stared at Bobby coldly. She wore a white T-shirt over faded denim cutoffs. Her hands were balled into tight fists, held awkwardly at her sides.
His mind racing, Bobby frantically struggled to think up an explanation. He glanced quickly at Samantha.
To his surprise, Samantha’s expression was fearful. Her mouth had dropped open and she appeared to be trembling.
Why does she look so terrified?
raced through Bobby’s mind. Why does Samantha look so terrified of her own sister?
Bobby realized he was going to have to be the one to get them out of this embarrassing spot. Samantha was too frightened to be helpful.
He took a deep breath and forced a smile. “Bree—hi!” he called, waving and stepping over to her.
She nodded but didn’t say anything. Her eyes were fixed coldly on his.
â€œSamantha and I—we were just talking about you,” Bobby said cheerfully, ignoring her hard expression.
â€œYou were?” Bree asked in a dull, lifeless voice.
â€œWell, it was so funny,” Bobby said, thinking fast. “I mean, Samantha and I—we bumped into each other. Just a minute ago. And I thought it was you! Do you believe it? I started talking with her, and I called her
Bree.
I thought it was you.”
Bree’s eyes traveled to her sister. “I didn’t know you were coming here tonight, Sam,” Bree said suspiciously.
â€œI—I was shopping,” Samantha stammered. “I didn’t have a date or anything. So—you know me. When in doubt, shop.” She let out an awkward laugh.
Why isn’t Samantha better at lying? Bobby wondered. Why is she trembling? She can’t be
that
frightened of Bree—can she?
â€œI—I was just explaining to Bobby that I wasn’t you, that I’m me,” Samantha continued, stammering awkwardly.
Bree appeared to relax a little. She unballed her fists and lowered her hands. Her hair was tied tightly behind her head with a blue band. She wore no eye makeup or lipstick.
She looks really outstanding, Bobby thought.
They both do. Maybe I could talk them
both
into hanging out with me tonight. A two-for-one deal. Give them both a break.
I could handle it, he thought, chuckling to himself.
â€œI didn’t know you were coming here tonight,”Samantha told her sister. “We could have come together.”
â€œI was bored,” Bree replied. “So I thought I’d get some new jeans. I ruined that pair, sliding in the grass at the family picnic last week, remember?”
Samantha nodded. “Well, come on. I’ll help you.” She took Bree’s arm and started to lead her away.
â€œHey, uh—” Bobby didn’t know what to say. “I could come along and—”
â€œBye, Bobby,” Samantha called back to him. “Great running into you.”
    â€œCall me, okay?” Bree asked.
    â€œI don’t
believe
this,” Bobby muttered, watching the sisters hurry away.
I came up with a perfect explanation. I got Samantha and me out of that jam.
And then they both run away like I’ve got a
disease
or something!
    What was
that
about? Why was Samantha so eager to take Bree away?
He scratched his head, trying to puzzle it out.
Samantha is totally nuts, Bobby decided. They’re
both
totally nuts.
He started walking toward the parking lot. I should drop them both, he told himself. There are so many girls at Shadyside High who are being deprived because of them. So many girls just
dying
to go out with Bobby the Man.
But there was something special about Samantha and Bree. It wasn’t just their good looks, Bobby realized. It wasn’t just the way they held him, the way they both kissed him so needily. It wasn’t the fact that they both seemed to like him so much.
    Lots of girls are nuts
