talk this out with Finn, the levelheaded one of them both. Then everything would be back to normal.
    At least, he hoped so.

“I THINK I like my law professor.”
The gulp of soda Derek had just taken sprayed out of his mouth as Finn’s words hit his ears. He coughed around the fizzy shit that had gone halfway up his nose as he stared at Finn with watering eyes. There’s no fucking way he just said—
    “You know, Professor Hayes?”
You’ve gotta be shittin’ me, Derek thought, as he wiped the back of his hand over his mouth. Finn had a lopsided grin on his face that told Derek his friend was close to shit-faced from the girly Jell-O shots he’d been swallowing all night.
Trying to work out what the hell to say to Finn’s confession, he shut his eyes for a second and tried to drown out the loud beat of the dance music that was throbbing throughout the house. He was surprised the windows weren’t rattling from the vibration. His head sure as shit was.
He couldn’t believe what had just come out of Finn’s mouth. He glowered at him, irrationally pissed that the one person he wanted to talk him out of the most moronic idea he’d ever had was having the same damn one.
Motherfucker. “Are you out of your damn mind?”
As soon as the words spewed out of his mouth, Derek knew they were the wrong ones to say. The smile that had been across Finn’s face slipped a notch. “No. I mean it. I think he’s really hot.”
“Then you’re an idiot. As well as drunk.”
He watched Finn’s shoulders tense, and even though they were roughly the same height and he was trying to be intimidating, the slight sway to Finn’s stance lessened the impact.
“Fuck you, man. I’m not drunk.”
“Yeah, you are,” Derek said, shaking his head. He threw his cup in a large trash can and took a step toward Finn.
    “Am not.”
“Listen to what you’re saying, Danny boy—”
“What? That I like Professor Hayes?”
“Yeah…,” he said, and looked around. “You might want to keep that little tidbit to yourself.”
Finn scanned their surroundings and then shrugged. “No one’s listening.”
“If you think that, you’re an even bigger dumbass than I originally thought.” He knew he was being a dick, but hearing Finn say out loud what he himself had been tossing around in his head made him see what a gigantic mistake it would be.
    “You’re being an asshole.”
    “Why? ’Cause the truth hurts?”
“You know what? I wanted to talk to my friend about this. But maybe you can tell him to come find me when he shows up, because you’re acting like a judgmental prick.”
Before Derek could grab Finn’s arm, his friend walked out of the back door to the strip of beach that Bianca’s house looked out over. He sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
Fucking hell , he was being judgmental. That was totally unlike him. Usually he wouldn’t give a shit who Finn liked. He would likely be the one encouraging a sex-a-thon with his hot professor. So what the hell was his problem? Oh yeah, he wanted the exact same thing.
Deciding one shot of tequila was allowed considering the circumstances, he snatched up a glass, downed it, and then walked toward the back door. He needed to find Finn and let him know everything was cool. The guy had been stumbling and swaying on his feet, and just because Derek didn’t know what to do about his jacked-up reactions to Devaney didn’t mean that Finn was in the same situation. He owed it to his buddy to hear him out.
Heading down the stairs to the long stretch of sand, he looked to his right and then his left, and there was Finn, a fair way up for someone who was three sheets to the wind.
Derek sucked in a breath and decided right then to forget about his whacked-out fantasies. It wasn’t like anything would ever come of it. Devaney was rich as a king, smarter than Derek even knew was possible, and probably thought he was a ridiculous kid he had to
