pearl sheâd found in the air shaft.
âThat must be from my gown!â Joanna said excitedly.
Just then there was a knock on the door, and Beau entered carrying two gowns. âFor Liz,â he said, hanging an emerald green satin gown on one rack. âAnd, Joanna,â he said, forcing a smile, âcareful trying yours on. Some of the seams are just basted. Iâll be back in a few minutes to see how youâre doing.â Then he left the fitting room.
Joanna and Liz ducked behind two oriental screens and quickly changed into the gowns.
âThis is perfect,â Liz said, smoothing the satin folds over her hips.
âOh, Lizzy, you look great!â Joanna said as she turned to look at her own reflection and frowned. âToo bad the rest of the bridal party isnât here.â Turning to Nancy, she added, âTwo of my bridesmaids had last-minute emergencies and wonât even arrive until Friday morning. Theyâre going to miss tomorrow nightâs rehearsal dinner!â
âNot a big deal,â Liz said, trying to calm her friend. âWeâll make do without them.â
âBut itâs going to throw off the procession,â Joanna insisted. âEveryone will be confused.â
âIf it would help, Bess and I could take their places at the rehearsal,â Nancy offered. âThen weâll clue them in when they arrive.â
âWould you?â Joannaâs green eyes widened hopefully. âWeâre rehearsing at St. Patrickâs Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. Samâs brothers will be thereâand theyâre so cute! We start at five, then weâre off to dinner at the Russian Tea Room.â
There was a knock at the door, and Nancy opened it to find Beau.
âHowâs it going?â he asked.
âIâm in loveââLiz twirled aroundââwith my dress!â
Beau smiled. âItâs always nice to have a satisfied client.â He knelt beside Joanna and re-arrangedthe bustle of her gown. âWith a few tucks, this should be fine, too. Though Iâm not giving up on the gown with your motherâs pearls.â
âThanks for whipping this up for me, Beau,â Joanna said sincerely. âI know that rumors are flying about the gown Mimi made for me.â
Beau tensed for a moment, then nodded. âI saw Deliaâs report this morning.â
âBut I havenât spoken to Mimi for months,â Joanna told him. âI want you to know that Iâm going to stick with you and wear one of your designs. No matter what Mimi does!â
âThanks,â Beau told Joanna. âMost clients arenât so loyal. Youâve been an angel.â
âMimi is persistent,â Liz added. âCan you believe that she had an invitation to her show hand-delivered to Joanna this morning?â Liz snorted. âThat woman doesnât give up.â
âAn invitation?â Beau said, glancing at Nancy. âThereâs your chance.â
âDonât worry. Iâm not going,â Joanna said.
âBut you should,â Beau insisted.
Quickly Nancy explained that she and Bess needed a way into Mimi Piazzaâs studio. âShe might have something to do with stealing Beauâs designs. Maybe she even knows something about your gown.â
âWhat?â Joanna and Liz said in unison.
âMimi has always been a rival of mine,â Beau said. âSheâd love to see my business crumble, and considering the way things are going, she may get her wish.â
âI really need a way to check her out,â Nancy said.
âWell, then, I guess weâll be attending her show on Thursday morning,â Joanna said firmly. âIâll call her studio and make sure that you and Bess are added to the guest list.â

âModeling is a lot of hard work,â Bess said. She rolled her shoulders and rubbed the back of her
